Reading & Language Workshop
Readers are beginning to read mystery books that support our “Investigation” unit. Literature Discussion Groups are up and running in all three classrooms for this unit. Your child will be involved in a book group at some point during the unit. Our first Language Workshop book for “Investigation” is called The Wretched Stone. This is a story about a mysterious stone that was brought aboard a ship. The stone seemed to have a “spell” on the crew that had once been singing, dancing, storytelling, and very engaged with one another. Chris Van Allsburg’s craft of using the stone as a bigger symbol for society has been a great opportunity for students to see the connection in their own lives with technology. We will continue to read very thought-provoking literature during this unit.
Talking Points:
a.) What mystery are you reading?
b.) Tell me what the stone symbolizes in the book The Wretched Stone.
c.) What reading goals do you have now that MAP testing is finished?
Math Workshop
Mathematicians will be finishing a short equivalent fractions unit on Monday. Please review the study guide that was sent home (salmon colored paper) this week of which includes the answers. Monday will also begin Math MAP testing in class, therefore iPads need to come to school charged and ready for a whole day of work (100% charge). Additionally, mathematicians will begin a comparing fractions unit as well. Next week will be a big math week as the end of the week closes out the 1st semester of school. Wow!
Talking Points:
a.) What is your strategy in finding an equivalent fraction to 2/8?
b.) How does knowing your factors and multiples help in finding equivalent fractions?
c.) How did the Bike Course activity help you to begin understanding equivalent fractions?
