Principal's Message
Dear Lockwood Families,
The days are growing longer and brighter. Spring is truly a magical time of year and my absolute favorite season. This is also a time for energy and growth and the Lockwood Leopards are truly growing and oh so full of energy!
I wanted to take some time to give a huge thank you to the families who volunteered to present at Career Day for students and our Cultural Awareness Forum for staff. This was by far the most amazing day this year. Students absolutely loved all the speakers. Students are hoping for Career Day to be an annual event they enjoyed it so much. Staff learned so much from our parents who led the cultural professional development that afternoon. Staff were so thankful for the information shared and would also like this event to become an annual event. The support that families gave to Lockwood on this day was above and beyond and I am so grateful that I was here to learn from you all!
Along with spring, comes SBA testing. In thinking about ways to support your child in having a stress-free and successful testing experience, please think about the following tips and tricks for testing days:
- Get a good night's sleep and eat a high protein breakfast. Drink plenty of water.
- Practice guided imagery, visualizations of succeeding on the test, mentally “going where the information is stored in your brain”, or breathing techniques.
- Don’t study right before the test. Concentrate on being calm and mentally accessing the information you have already studied.
- Get to school a little early or right on time.
- Don’t engage in negative talk with other students before the test, such as “I’m so nervous – I don’t know if I studied enough.”
- Eliminate negative thoughts or self-talk by replacing them with a positive affirmation, like “I am prepared for the test and I will do well” or “I am smart – I can do this.”
- Make a decision to ignore students who finish the test before you. Research shows that students who finish early usually don’t score as well as those who take more time.
Next week is spring break. I hope that you all find the time to soak in the sunshine, spend time with friends and family, and rejuvenate. Wishing you all health, happiness, and fun in the sun!
In partnership,
Tamorah Redshaw
Proud Principal

5th Grade Pass the Hat Fundraiser
The 5th grade End-of-Year Celebration Party is only a few months away. In order to make this event a possibility, we are collecting donations March 28th-April 10th. Our goal is to raise $25.00 per 5th grade student/teacher. Lockwood 5th Grade Fundraiser Link
All proceeds will go towards the 5th grade end of year celebration and anything not used for that purpose will go back to help fund PTA programs. Please share with friends and family. Thank you so much for helping to give Lockwood 5th graders the opportunity to celebrate the end of their elementary school years.
For questions about the End-of-Year Celebration Party, please email Amanda Sics - bee_128@hotmail.com.
Technology Use Reminders
Please take the time to review the NSD's Responsible Use Procedure (RUP) with your child. Some important talking points are as follows:
- Access to technology is a privilege, not a right, and as such, all users must seriously consider the responsibilities associated with the opportunity to use technology devoted to activities that support teaching and learning (p 2).
- Responsible use by students, staff and guests shall include the following: 1. Creation of files, digital projects, videos, web pages and podcasts using network resources shall be in support of educational activities; 2. When participating in blogs, wikis, bulletin boards, social networking sites and groups, and the creation of content for podcasts, e-mail and web pages that support educational research, users will create online names that are appropriate and use appropriate language/content in all online posts; 3. Student and Staff use of the network for incidental personal use shall be in accordance with all District policies and procedures. Such incidental work, while not prohibited, will not be provided any additional staffing resources to support or enable; 4. Connection of personal electronic devices (wired or wireless) including portable devices with network capabilities to the District network using NSD credentials. Students will only use personal electronic devices on the District’s network at the discretion and approval of their teacher, school building staff and/or administration. Connection of any personal electronic device to the District network by any person is subject to all guidelines in this document; 5. Users will help maintain a safe computing environment by notifying appropriate campus or district officials of inappropriate behavior, vandalism, vulnerabilities, risks and breaches of NSD policy involving technology. If the user is uncertain whether an activity is permitted or appropriate, he/she will ask a teacher/administrator before engaging in that activity.
Recess Volunteers NEEDED!
We are looking for ways to create a more engaging and fun recess for all our students. To do this we are asking for your help. If you would like to volunteer to monitor a structured game once or several times a week, please sign up for a spot(s). Use this Signup Genius Link to sign-up.
Volunteers will need to follow the current Northshore School District Volunteer guidelines. Students will have been pre-taught the expectations and rules for each game. We appreciate your support! If you have any questions, please contact Sean Schoenfeldt at sschoenfeldt@nsd.org or 425-483-5813.
Parent Input Form for Student Placement
At Lockwood, our staff realizes that your child's classroom placement is important to you, and that all students have different learning styles and needs. We are providing this Parent Input Form for you to share any specific learning needs, strengths, or conditions you would like considered in the 2022-23 classroom assignment process. When filling out the form, please note the following:
- This information is NOT confidential. This form will be shared with staff during classroom assignment meetings.
- We cannot accept specific teacher requests. Please do not give a specific teacher name.
- We cannot guarantee placement in specific classrooms or with specific peers.
Our goal is to ensure that all Lockwood students have equal opportunity for a positive and strong educational experience. In determining placement, the teacher, grade level team, and administration spend significant time carefully considering your information, our observations at school, and our priority of creating balanced classrooms. Completion of this form is OPTIONAL; all students will be given the same considerations when being placed in a class whether or not parent input is received. This form is due by 4:00 pm, Tuesday, May 10th.
Pokemon Cards at School
There has been an uptick in students bringing trading cards to school - especially Pokemon cards. Please advise your child that these are NOT allowed at school. They are considered a toy, which are also not allowed at school. The cards are creating issues at recess that are trickling back into the classroom. If your child brings trading cards to school, they will be confiscated and only returned at the end of the day for them to then take home and not bring back to school. If this is a repeat offense, the cards will be sent to the office and the admin will give you a call to arrange a time for you to pick them up. Thank you!

Kenmore Middle School Parking Lot Issue
KMS is asking parents to not use the parking lot directly off of 66th Ave. (the one that shares the Bus Drop Off area) for pick up in the afternoons. They have over a third of their student body signed up for Spring sports and with pick up of KMS students and the Activity Bus, they need to eliminate some of the traffic. They have seen a significant uptick in parking along the curb in the bus drop off area, which gets in the way of the activity busses.
Families may continue to use the loop at the rear of the school as they have been, but if they could avoid the KMS front lot, that would make it easier for them in supporting dismissal for their own students.
There are a few important dates and events you will want to mark on your calendar in preparation for the upcoming months:

COVID Guidelines Information
The Washington State Department of Health (DOH) released updated COVID guidelines for K-12 schools in response to the governor’s lifting of the mask mandate effective March 12, 2022. While NSD continues to review updated guidance from Public Health Seattle & King County as well as the Snohomish Health District, here are basic details from the DOH.
- Beginning March 12, masks will be optional indoors and on school buses for grades K-12. However, masks are still recommended by our state and local health departments.
- Masks are required in health rooms regardless of symptoms. Staff in our early learning and Head Start programs are also required wear masks, and students in early learning and Head Start programs must be offered and encouraged to wear masks. Our COVID-19 Handbook has been updated and includes more details.
Experiencing a Crisis?
You are not alone. There are community supports for mental health, suicide prevention, substance abuse, self-harm and more. Please see the NSD website for contact information via the button below.
