Happy St. Patrick's Day!

Every March 17th, thousands of people put on their greenest clothing and participate in celebrations of St. Patrick’s Day. But do you really know who St. Patrick was and why he is celebrated? Patrick was born in AD 387 in Britain, which was part of the Roman Empire (that’s right — he wasn’t Irish!). He was captured by Irish pagans in his early teens and taken to Ireland, where he was enslaved for six years. During that time, he grew to like the spirit of the Irish. When he escaped and returned to his family, he vowed to one day return to Ireland. He studied at monasteries on the continent and was eventually ordained a priest and then a bishop. He was commissioned to be an apostle to Ireland. He endured many hardships. He baptized, confirmed and ordained priests and he built schools and monasteries. Thousands of people became Christians because of him. Eventually, the entire island of Ireland was converted to Christianity. Below is a prayer that he wrote.

"As I arise today,
may the strength of God pilot me,
the power of God uphold me,
the wisdom of God guide me.
May the eye of God look before me,
the ear of God hear me,
the word of God speak for me.
May the hand of God protect me,
the way of God lie before me,
the shield of God defend me,
the host of God save me.
May Christ shield me today.
Christ with me, Christ before me,
Christ behind me,
Christ in me, Christ beneath me,
Christ above me,
Christ on my right, Christ on my left,
Christ when I lie down, Christ when I sit,
Christ when I stand,
Christ in the heart of everyone who thinks of me,
Christ in the mouth of everyone who speaks of me,
Christ in every eye that sees me,
Christ in every ear that hears me.

Egg Cartons Needed

Mrs. St. Vil's class is in need of egg cartons for an art project. Please send them in to the school office or directly to Mrs. St. Vil's class. Thank you

The kids had a great time last week. It was a fun-filled week, celebrating being part of the nearly 800 Lutheran grade schools in our country. We appreciate all of the parents and students who came to our worship service. I hope that you enjoyed it. Thank you to our parent volunteers on Friday, we could not have done it without you.

New Visitor Check in system and New Background check system

We have recently installed the RAPTOR visitor check in system and are beginning to use it. Any visitor to Holy Cross will be required to check in using a valid ID and will be given a printed visitor tag. The ID will be left in the office until the visitor leaves and will be returned when the tag is returned. In addition, this system will automatically screen all visitors to see if they are on the sex offenders list anywhere in the country. Please DO NOT send anyone to do business or pick up your child without an ID (License, green card, state ID, etc.).

In addition, effective immediately, we will begin running background checks for all volunteers through the new system. You will be sent a link. You will click on the link and complete an authorization for a background check. The results will be sent directly to my email, it is 100% confidential. Be on the lookout for the link.

Girl's Basketball Team

Unfortunately, due to reasons outside of our control, our girl's basketball team will not be attending the National tournament. We were doing a good job with fundraising and I do appreciate the support of the Holy Cross family. Thank you to those school families who came to Anthony's last Friday. You Rock!

Unless instructed otherwise, I will be refunding all of the funds that were raised. If you did make a donation and do not want it refunded, it will be used to support the athletic department in general. Please let me know. Otherwise, it will be refunded. We do have plans in the works to do something special for the girls, to acknowledge their tremendous achievement.

Registration is now open. It will open to the public on March 5. Space is limited in every grade level. 6th grade and PK2 are now full and we are taking a waiting list.

A frequent question is... do we have to register our child every year? The answer is YES. Until all the process has been completed, your child does not have a reserved space in class. Even though over 90% of our students return each year, we cannot count on that until a commitment has been made.

Another question is... what is the deadline? There is no deadline, but when the classes are full we cannot take any additional children. The early registration rate does end on May 1st and rates increase by $100.

If you have any questions about the registration process, please do not hesitate to call or email me.

Here are the steps:

1. Complete the registration on Renweb

2. Pay the registration fee

3. Sign the tuition plan

Accreditation Parent Survey

I sent this via email yesterday but in case you missed it, here it is again. If you already completed it, thank you. You do not need to do it again.

Dear Parents,

As an accredited school, Holy Cross must go through a lengthy process to be re-accredited every five years. It involves literally hundreds of hours of work and analysis and the involvement of all of our full time staff. We have been very hard at work and we will have our accreditation visit in May. A team of six individuals will spend several days at Holy Cross and will review all of our accreditation materials and observe and document everything we are doing here. Part of the process is surveying our 1st through 8th grade students and our parents. The students have completed their surveys. Now it is your turn. Please keep in mind the purpose of this survey when completing it. It is for our accreditation visit. Kindly click on the link below to complete the survey. It should take you about 12 minutes. Most questions are multiple choice (Agree, Disagree, Neither Agree or Disagree). You may leave a comment but this is not required. There are two short answers at the end.

Thank you in advance for your help.

Holy Cross is selected as "Program of the Year" by the Children's Trust

The early childhood department of Holy Cross Lutheran School was recently selected as "Program of the Year" by the Children's Trust as a result of our involvement with the Quality Counts Early Childhood Rating program. Our program has a five star rating. This is a tremendous honor and we are so proud of our teachers and other early childhood department staff. We will be honored at a banquet at Jungle Island in June. Congratulations to our staff for this tremendous accomplishment.
