Member of the Month
Our Cherokee County Chamber October member of the month is Colleen Kelly, an Independent NYR Organic Consultant who has been a member of the Chamber for over a year now! A little bit about Colleen; she was born and raised in Cherokee County, NC. What she loves about Cherokee County are the mountains. She loves being in the foothills of the Smoky Mountains, the bold colors they produce, as well as the heritage behind this area. Besides loving the mountains, she also loves reading, enjoying the outdoors, and being with her family.
The company she works for is NYR Organic. If you are not familiar with NYR Organic, it is the United States selling arm of the London based brand, Neal’s Yard Remedies. The philosophy of NYR Organic is transforming people’s lives, by educating and empowering them on how to live more healthily through the power of nature. This is one of the many reasons Colleen was so drawn to the company; she appreciates the company’s mindfulness when it comes to using cosmetics safely. She also respects them wanting to reduce their carbon footprint, as well as the use of fair trade for their products. NYR Organic promotes health and beauty through a range of cosmetics including, body washes, soaps, deodorants, essential oils, shampoos, conditioners, skin care regimens, and books.
In the future, Colleen wants to be more involved with the company and hopes to have achieved a position as a team/group leader. The Chamber family supports Colleen in achieving her goals! If you want more information about NYR Organic or would like to schedule a one-on-one or a group appointment/workshop, contact Colleen!

STEAMPUNK FUN is coming to Murphy as the Arts Council plans a costumed fundraising party for the Halloween season. Mark your calendar for Saturday, October 27, at the Ballroom in downtown Murphy. Dancing to music especially selected by DJ Mad Hatter. Historically researched hors d'oeuvres from the Hiwassee Dam HS cooking classes. Wine served, cocktails available. Party from 8:00 to midnight! Steampunk and Victorian costumes encouraged and a prize will be awarded for best look!
SO WHAT IS STEAMPUNK? - -
Steampunk is a sub-genre of science fiction or science fantasy that incorporates technology and aesthetic designs inspired by 19th-century industrial steam-powered machinery.
Steampunk most recognizably features anachronistic technologies or retro=futuristic inventions as people in the 19th century might have envisioned them, and is likewise rooted in the Victorian era's perspective on fashion, culture, architectural style, and art. The technology may include fictional machines like those found in the works of H. G. Wells and Jules Verne.
Steampunk also refers to any of the artistic styles, clothing fashions, or subcultures that have developed from the aesthetics of steampunk fiction, Victorian-era fiction, art nouveau design, and films from the mid-20th century.
Also in October the Arts Council will sponsor an exhibit of autumn themed artworks in the Cultural Calendar Room at the Murphy Art Center. Exhibit opens Friday October 5, and runs through November 1st.

ANGEL STREET, Patrick Hamilton THRILLER Oct. 12 – 14; 19 – 21
A Broadway hit first produced in London under the title Gaslight and filmed twice, Angel Street tells the story of the Manninghams, who live on Angel Street in 19th century London. As the curtain rises, all appears to be the essence of Victorian tranquility. It is soon apparent, however, that Mr. Manningham, a suavely handsome man, is slowly driving his gentle, devoted wife, Bella, to the brink of insanity with an insinuating kindness that masks more sinister motives. While he is out, Mrs. Manningham has an unexpected caller: amiable, paternal Inspector Rough from Scotland Yard. Rough is convinced that Mr. Manningham is a homicidal maniac wanted for a murder committed fifteen years earlier in this very house. Major critics agree that Angel Street contains some of the most brilliant, suspenseful sequences in modern theatre. Call 828-389-2787 for information/tickets or visit online thepeacocknc.org
