Theodore Roosevelt

The 26th President Of The United States

Young Teddy Roosevelt

He was born on October 27th, 1858. He had two sisters and one brother. He was always sick and weak as a child. Teddy went to Harvard University and Columbia Law School but he dropped out of law school to begin his political career as a republican in the New York Assembly.

First Progressive President

Theodore Roosevelt believed in conservation and helped with the conservation movement. He loved nature and his work is the reason that we have national parks today. He also cut down on the use of the spoils system (where unqualified people would get government jobs just because they knew someone who works in politics). He promoted the merit system (in which people had to be actually qualified to get government positions). He was one of the first presidents to be on the side of unions and the workers. He proved this by the coal strike of 1902 where he threatened to send troops into the coal mines which forced the company that owned the coal mines to meet workers demands. He was nicknamed "the trustbuster" because he was known to go after monopolies and break them up (an example is Standard Oil). He paved the way for other presidents like Taft and Wilson to look further into child labor, long work days, working conditions and low wages and eventually correct the problems. He also passed acts that made for more inspections and better quality food. Teddy Roosevelt is sometimes considered to be the first modern president.

TR's Many Accomplishments

Theodore Roosevelt had many accomplishments. Some of his accomplishments included separating many monopolies so they couldn't continue to take advantage of the consumer. Passing the Pure Food and Drug Act and the Meat Inspection Act to make are food safer to eat. He also set up many national parks to preserve the beauty of nature in America. Most importantly he served two terms as the president of the United States. He is known as one of the nations greatest president

Why did I Choose TR?

I wanted to research Teddy Roosevelt because I feel like he was the start of the reform from presidents in America. Even if something didn't happen during his presidency his Ideas were brought to life by other presidents such as Taft and Wilson. He was one of the first presidents to side with the people instead of big business. He was one of the first modern presidents. Plus I had already heard of him but I didn't know anything about him so I wanted to learn more on him.
