Weekly Update
Week of January 30, 2023
JAMS Families/Familias de JAMS,
Middle school is a time of rapid growth, exploration, and risk taking. Taking risks provides young people the opportunity to test their skills and abilities and discover who they are. But, some risks—such as smoking/vaping, using drugs and drinking can have harmful and long-lasting effects on a teen’s health and well-being. In California, marijuana is legal for adults but that can lead to unintended access for teens. Today’s pot is much, much stronger and can derail healthy brain development.
At John Adams we focus on supporting the whole child and address academic as well as social emotional needs. All students receive information on the dangers of drugs, alcohol, vaping and prescription drug misuse as well as the dangers of fentanyl during their time in middle school. We also offer support services for students in need. Our district has a “controlled substance” policy which I encourage you to review with your child.
We also provide parents with parent education and awareness through PTSA and ELAC parent education nights. Parents are a powerful influence in the lives of their teens. When parents make a habit of knowing about their teens—what they are doing, who they are with, where they are and setting clear expectations for behavior with regular check-ins to be sure these expectations are being met—they can reduce their teens’ risks for injury, drug, alcohol, and nictone/vape use. I strongly urge you to review the resources below and reach out if you need help or have questions.
