Teachers Matter
LEISD Celebrating Teacher Appreciation Week April 30 - May 4
Teaching and teachers have come a long way since the day of the one room school house. Today teachers welcome and embrace students from varied ability levels, with many different home languages, while teaching more concepts at an ever increasing difficulty, as they themselves try to stay ahead of the technology curve. Teachers not only have to be experts in their content area, they must be masterful relationship builders. Teachers did not choose their profession because of large salaries, or lavish benefits, or great fame. Teachers chose to dedicate their professional lives to students who are our future doctors, lawyers, soldiers, scientists, actors, presidents, CEO’s, CFO’s, nurses, teachers, police officers, fire fighters, librarians, inventors, bankers, stock brokers, pilots, architects, engineers, and all the other professions that must know how to read, write, and calculate. The one thing teachers need to hear is that they make a difference. Next week (May 7 - 11)) is the National Teacher Appreciation Week and the National Teacher Appreciation Day is Tuesday, May 8 but LEISD is celebrating one week early due to STAAR testing. Please take a moment to personally thank a teacher that made a difference in your life, in the life of your child, or in the life of a child you care deeply for such as a niece, nephew or grandchild.
We will celebrate and thank our teachers at LEHS all this week in conjunction with LEISD Teacher Appreciation Week so please join us in making sure they know that the investment they are making in our students is not only noticed but appreciated. In the words of Professor Stephen Hawking, “Today, we need great teachers more than ever. We must always remember teachers matter.”

LEHS Teacher of the Year: Mr. Olenski
Mr. James Olenski is a special teacher. His passion for working with teens is literally a sun up to sun down job. He is the team lead for our Algebra I team and over the past 3 years our student’s success on the state EOC exam has steadily improved. Three years ago he asked to start a PALS (Peer Assistance and Leadership) class. This group mentors students at a partner Elementary campus as well as on our own campus. They have partnered with our Goals and Aims students at Zellars to do community service projects such as Feed My Starving Children and helping at the nearby Senior Community. Once the regular school day has dismissed, Mr. Olenski coordinates and leads our Evening Academy which serves some of our at-risk students who need a different opportunity to complete high school and graduate. Last summer Mr. Olenski also served as the administrative intern at the Elementary Summer School campus again stretching his learning and leadership as well as making a positive impact on yet another group of LEISD students. In addition to all of his work with students Mr. Olenski somehow finds time to pursue his Master’s Degree and administrative certification. He will complete his program and receive his degree this May. As part of his leadership training for the past two years, Mr. Olenski has participated in the LEISD leadership academy called ALI. Congrats on a job well done Mr. Olenski!

I'd like to recognize the work of Gwendolyn Learo and Dalton Wilcox who served as co-presidents or the store and led the recertification project team. Gabi Necastro, Amy Lamberson, and Maverick Swenson did a fine job presenting our store's Marketing Information Management plan in the School Based Enterprise competition.
Four members Andrew Mendoza, Abigail Resendiz De La Cruz, Aimen Shah, and Lucas Roper earned certificates at their leadership academies
Finally, I would like to recognize three senior DECA leaders, Hazel Ibarra, Martha Paz and Gwendolyn Learo who competed in the Creative Marketing Project category. Hazel and Martha served as our co-presidents this year and have had a tremendous impact on the growth in size and quality of DECA at Little Elm in their four years as members. Gwen is the first Little Elm student who has advanced to ICDC two years in a row in her individual event in over 13 years!

Report Harmful, Harassing, and Bullying Behavior
LEISD has an on-line tool called "Anonymous Alerts" that students, parents, and teachers can use to report harmful, harassing, and bullying type behaviors. Anonymous Alerts bullying reporting mobile app helps combat bullying and other negative activity in schools by empowering students to speak up. Social and peer pressures are some of the hardest obstacles for students to overcome. Anonymous Alerts encourages students, parents and staff to quickly, easily, and anonymously report bullying, cyber-bullying, gang-related issues, and other sensitive topics through private messages to school officials by building. All reports remain completely anonymous even during a two-way email conversation, although submitters have the option to reveal their identity if they prefer to have a person-to-person discussion.
To send a report from the Web/Internet go to: www.anonymousalerts.com/littleelmisd/
