October 2021
A message from Ms. Alexander, Principal
October 20th-29th, 2021
These conferences provide a great opportunity for teachers and families to meet to discuss student progress over the first few months of school. Your participation is essential, as you are truly your child's first teacher and you know them best!
You have the option this year of meeting your child's teacher face-to-face at Broad Street OR virtually via Zoom. Either way, we appreciate your time. Please understand teachers can only schedule one conference per family.
Also, you may want to schedule a conference with your child's Fine and Applied Arts teachers (Music, PE, Art, Library). These educators have valuable insights about students outside the classroom setting and can be a good resource for additional information about your child.
More information regarding signing up for conferences will be sent home on Wednesday, October 13th.

Walk to School Day - Wednesday, October 6
Walk to School Day is an annual tradition here at Broad Street. This year, in addition to celebrating Walk to School Day, we are hoping to promote overall health and wellness through our planned activities.
This year's celebration will include:
- Paw Print Eye Spy - Students can decorate and post paw prints around the community to look for during walks or bike rides around the neighborhood. You may even spot some while driving around.
- Chalk Your Walk - Families are encouraged to decorate their sidewalks with drawings and/or encouraging messages. Alternately, you can join the PTO to chalk the Broad Street sidewalks on Tues, Oct 5 from 5:30-6:30 (we will have extra chalk onsite).
- Spirit Day - Students are encouraged to show their school spirit by wearing their Mechanicsburg Strong t-shirts, maroon & steel, or other Wildcat apparel.
- Healthy Snack - A healthy fruit breakfast/snack will be provided as students arrive at school.
- Obstacle Course - Students will be able to enjoy a chalk obstacle course by the playground during recess.
- Crossing Guard Appreciation - Students will make cards of appreciation for the crossing guards.
Below is a copy of the Paw Print that you can print, decorate, and post in a window. A copy was also sent home with your child last week.
Weekend Food Bags
In addition to the free breakfasts and lunches provided to all students this year, there will also be an opportunity for students to take home food on Fridays. Mechanicsburg Area School District is privileged to offer a weekend food distribution program for families in need. The purpose of the program is to provide non-perishable, vitamin-fortified, and easy to prepare foods to children at times when school resources are not available, such as weekends and school vacations. Bags will include two breakfasts, two meals, and two snacks. The program is free of charge.
If your family is interested in receiving weekend food bags, please return the form.(see below) If you are interested in volunteering to help with the Elementary Food Pantry, please reach out to Mrs. Mandia, lmandia@mbgsd.org
*if you need a hardcopy of the form, reach out to Mrs. Mandia via email
Specialist Spotlight - Music
Hello Broad Street families! My name is Danna Cheung and I am the General Music teacher here at Broad Street. I am so excited to provide music instruction for your children and we have been off to a musical start already! I wanted to be a music teacher was because I wanted to share the simple joy that music brings to our lives. My goal for students at Broad Street is to leave with an appreciation for music and have it be something they can enjoy later in life by singing, learning a new instrument, or listening to music. The music curriculum for our students here at Broad Street starts with the foundations of music. Your children will be doing a lot of singing, listening to music, dancing, instrument playing, learning music as a language, music literacy, and so much more. If you ever have a question for me feel free to reach out on Seesaw or send me an email at dcheung@mbgsd.org.
