CAMP ACADEMICS

GREETINGS

Well, the cold air has arrived. On Wednesday, November 12th, we had the earliest freeze in 17 years.

I wanted to remind you that I will not be at school on Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday the week of November 17, 2014. Also, I will not be at school during the week we return from Thanksgiving Break. As you recall, I will be out for a medical procedure. I will be checking in with my substitute on a frequent basis. Thank you for being so understanding on this matter.

HAPPY THANKSGIVING!

READING/WRITING

We will continue our author study of Pat Mora's work. We have read three books: A Birthday Basket for Tia, Listen to the Desert, and The Race of Toad and Deer. The kids have loved reading her books. She mixes English and Spanish words in her literature. Your child can visit her website to find out more about her. We are identifying the characters, the setting, and the theme of her books. We are using this information in our writing.

MATH

We are working on the concept of subtraction. The class has been doing subtraction problems for about a month, so when we started this section in the math book, they thought it was "baby work". The students are really doing a great job with this concept. Any reinforcement you can give at home will help tremendously. We are also continuing to work on word problems. They are easy problems, but they are building blocks to more challenging problems in the future. We will begin learning about capacity. It's hard to believe that the students are learning about this in first grade.

SOCIAL STUDIES

We continue our study of citizenship. We will begin to discuss past and present. Ask your child what yesterday was and explain to them that it was the past, that today is the present, and tomorrow will be the future.

SCIENCE

We will be looking at soil and what it is composed of. We will be planting beans in the next few weeks. Be sure to check with your child to see if we have planted yet and what progress has been made in the growing process.

PEARLS OF WISDOM;

If you want to get rich, COUNT YOUR BLESSINGS.
