Dear Fifth Grade Parents and Guardians,
Here we are, December already! How is the time going by so fast? Students are working hard and learning a lot. We are seeing a lot of growth in our students; both academically and socially. Students appear to be acting more responsibly and maturely. When you see your student go “above and beyond” at home, whether taking out the trash without being asked, or working on schoolwork pro-actively, let them know you are proud of them. When students know that their efforts are noticed and appreciated, they work that much harder in all areas.
Here’s to “our” kids! : )
Mrs. Boyer, Miss Miller, Mr. Rawls
Mrs. Boyer's Math Awesomeness!
Done any cooking lately? Did you follow the directions? We have been talking about the fractions and cooking is an excellent real world time to practice adding fractions of unlike denominators. 1/3 cup sugar + 3/4 cup of milk = 1 and 1/12
Go make some cookies!
Math joke: Why was 6 afraid of 7? because 7 8 9 hahahaaaaaa!
Miss Miller's Reading Nook
Are you traveling over the break? Are you surrounded by little cousins, sisters, and brothers who want you to read aloud to them? Or are you relaxing with a nice cup of hot chocolate on the couch?
Well don’t forget to bring a book with you during all your holiday adventures! Remember to grab an I PICK book!
P- What’s my purpose for reading?
I- Am I interested in the subject/topic?
C- Do I understand what I’m reading?
K- Do I know most of the vocabulary words?
Mr. Rawls' Science Corner
We will be focusing on cycles this six weeks. We will start with a review of the Water Cycle, cover the CO2/O2 Cycle and Photosynthesis and then various plant and animal Life Cycles. Photosynthesis will be one of the key concepts studied.
Photosynthesis is the process in which plants with chlorophyll convert sunlight, water and carbon dioxide into glucose (sugar) and oxygen. The word “photosynthesis” means to make or put together with light. The students are expected to explain the process using both a chemical formula explanation and a science diagram explanation in which they will manipulate a representative model of the parts of the process that they will produce. In addition, they are expected to be able to generalize this knowledge to answer higher level, critical thinking questions about the concept.
Example: What are two limiting factors that determine plant growth? Answer - Sunlight and Water
