The Junior Journal
October 2017 - Team 2019
Welcome Back!
As we approach Fall Break, it seems as though Junior year is flying by! With an extra week prior to Fall Break this year when students return in late October there will only be 7 weeks until Winter Break. This will be an important seven weeks in making sure that our students solidify their semester one grades, and begin thinking seriously about what the future holds.
Next Wednesday all juniors will take the PSAT. We also recommend that juniors schedule a time to take the SAT or ACT during the winter or spring of their junior year. Please see more below about this from Mrs. Frazer and don't hesitate to reach out to the team if you have any questions.
I shared with you in our August newsletter about two things I wanted our students to focus on this school year:
- Be a person of good character.
- Be kind to others.
I have continued to remind students daily about these two items and hope that you are having these same conversations at home.
I look forward to assisting you and your students in finishing up the first semester in a positive way! Go Dogs!
Sincerely,
Adam Poliskie

Updates from the Guidance Department - Mrs. Frazer
PSAT
Next week on Wednesday, October 11th all juniors will be taking the PSAT during the morning at BHS through 4th period. It is imperative that your student arrive on time that day, as we cannot accept students in late to test. Make-up tests will not be given, so please plan all appointments accordingly. Students will receive their room assignment information in their 4th period class early next week.
It is important your student does their best on this test, as it is a practice for the regular SAT/ACT they should take this school year; and there could be the potential to qualify for scholarships from this test score.
If your student attends Area 31 in the AM they WILL not go to Ben Davis this day. Please have them ride their usual bus to school or drop them off before 7:45 am.
College visits
Fall Break or Spring Break would be a great time for students to get in some college visits for the schools they are interested in! For official campus tours, you will register in advance on the college website. Juniors and seniors do get 2 days they can miss from school for a college visit. Please see the team website for the required form to submit prior to the absence. Your student should also communicate in advance with their teachers to coordinate any missed work/exams/tests. Students also will need to bring back proof of attendance of the visit to the office upon their return to school.
National Honors Society
Junior students will be invited to apply to the National Honors Society during their junior year. Students must have a 3.8 Cumulative GPA at the time of applying. Applications will be available after Winter Break.
Scholarships/Naviance
As a reminder, your students have FREE access to Naviance, a college and career preparation website. To log in, your student must visit the BHS homepage and click the Naviance link in the quick links section. Your students’ username is their student ID # and their password is their birthday with no dashes or spaces (mmddyyyy). There are scholarships your students can apply for NOW under the colleges tab and by clicking the “national scholarship search”.
If you have questions on any of these topics please reach out to Mrs. Frazer (rfrazer@brownsburg.k12.in.us)
Updates on Academics - Ms. Burke
Team 2019 just wrapped up Quarter 1 and your juniors were extremely productive! In order to maintain that success, please encourage your junior to finish out the semester strong. Be sure to check PowerSchool regularly for missing assignments or low test grades, then ask your student to check in with the teacher in the area of concern. You can stay on top of upcoming deadlines by checking Schoology or some teachers send a weekly agenda email. If you have any questions or concerns about your student’s grades or progress this semester, please let me know. I always encourage parents to set up meetings with me to discuss class challenges and successes. Feel free to send me an email to get a day scheduled! Sarah Burke: sburke@brownsburg.k12.in.us
Parent Meetings:
It is our goal this year to have meetings with all parents on Team 2019! Please don't hesitate to reach out to us about specific concerns/questions you have that we could meet about, or simply to meet and discuss the plan for the next two years of life at BHS. You can contact Mrs. Matherly to set up a meeting with any team member or contact any of the team members directly.

Student Health – Immunization Requirements
With Fall Break approaching, we wanted to send you a reminder about immunization requirements set by the Indiana Department of Health for your student’s senior year. You have lots of time to take care of this requirement, but since it was added in 2014, it sometimes catches parents by surprise.
For current 11th grade students to enter the 12th grade, you must have a second dose of the meningococcal vaccine (new requirement in 2014) by the first day of school, August 2nd, 2018. BHS will be looking for an updated immunization record or appropriate paperwork at the beginning of the next school year.
If you have any questions, please contact your family physician or the BHS Clinic.
