Instructional Focus: Annotating Text
Our current focus is annotating text as a reading and thinking strategy. Teachers in all disciplines have, or will soon be, using this strategy with students. Annotating is basically reading with a pen in your hand and using notes and markings to interact with the text to get the most out of it.
You might ask your student about this process and how it has worked for him or her.
The following information is adapted for our classrooms from a Harvard University publication: "Interrogating Texts: 6 Reading Habits to Develop in Your First Year at Harvard."

All-you-can-eat chili, drink and admission to the alumni ballgames is a $5 donation per person; $20 maximum for a family. A chili cook-off competition starts at 3 p.m. and is open to anyone wanting to enter a team. Deadline to enter a team is Saturday, Feb. 1, with a $40 entry fee. Prizes will be awarded in several categories.
To enter a team in the chili cook-off, contact Kim Payne at 770-5070 or kpayne@polkcountyhealth.net
or find a form at www.facebook.com/KeelingFoundationforKids.
Chili cook-off entry forms also are available at the Bolivar Area Chamber of Commerce, all Polk County Schools and Keeling Financial.
Proceeds from the evening go the Keeling Foundation for Kids to help students in all Polk County schools — Bolivar, Halfway, Pleasant Hope, Fair Play, Morrisville and Humansville. The foundation, named in honor of the late Gary Keeling, former BHS girls’ basketball coach, first sought to help students afford extracurricular activities.
The fund now also helps with basic student needs in outlying Polk County schools, providing funding for needs such as eyeglasses, backpack food programs, supplemental kindergarten milk programs, tuition for dual credit college classes as well as providing for items for extracurricular activities.

FAFSA Frenzy helps with college financial aid
Bolivar High School will host a Financial Aid FAFSA FRENZY on Sunday, February 9 from 2-4 p.m. in the BHS Computer Lab. The FAFSA Frenzy is a free event for students and parents who would like to receive professional, one-on-one help filling out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Next school year, the U.S. Department of Education will make more than $150 billion in postsecondary financial aid available to students throughout the nation. The FAFSA determines student eligibility for grants, loans, and certain scholarships. Completing the FAFSA is also a required step for students completing the A+ program.
At this workshop, representatives will be on hand to assist parents with applying for the FAFSA online. It is recommended that you have your 2013 taxes completed prior to attending this workshop. If you do not have your tax information available, you can still come and get the process started by acquiring your required pin number and beginning the registration process for the FAFSA. More information about the FAFSA is available at www.fafsa.ed.gov. Students whose parents attend the FAFSA Frenzy are also entered for a chance to win a scholarship for the fall 2014 term to be used at a Missouri institution.
