UOI 1: Who We Are
An inquiry into the nature of the self; beliefs and values; personal, physical, mental, social and spiritual health; human relationships including families, friends, communities, and cultures; rights and responsibilities; what it means to be human.
Central idea: There are rights and responsibilities of being a member of a community.
Key concepts: Form, Perspective, Responsibility
Related concepts: Citizenship, leaders, change, matter, properties, perspective

UOI Field Trip
What Are We Learning This Unit?
Math
- fluently add one-digit to two-digit numbers at least through 100
- use place value understanding, properties of operations, and the relationship between addition and subtraction to gain fluency when adding and subtracting
- explore patterns in addition and how those patterns can be used to help solve related facts.
English Language Arts
In English Language Arts, students will be exploring many different concepts this unit, we will be exploring:
- compound words and how to find their meaning
- understanding how to use dictionaries to help us check our spelling,
- identifying words and their connections to real life objects.
- the writing process through developing opinion pieces that have supporting details and a closing statement. Students will brainstorm, write, edit and revise before publishing their final work.
- key details in a text including setting, character, and important events in a story through asking questions.
- how to improve our comprehension, fluency and vocabulary when reading.
Arabic
Students in second through sixth grade will be divided into three groups based on their fluency in the language, and not their grade level.
We can potentially have three different levels in each grade.

Green
· I can introduce myself نفسي and greet others. السلام عليكم، مرحبا، اهلا وسهلا، صباح الخير، مساء الخير
· I can recognize the sound of letters and write them in correct form.
· I can memorize color and shape words, and numbers one through ten.
Blue:
· I can talk about myself نفسي and greet others. السلام عليكم، مرحبا، اهلا وسهلا، صباح الخير، مساء الخير
· I can recognize words and write simple phrases in correct from.
· I can memorize colors الالوان, shapes الاشكال, hobbies الهوايات, and numbers الارقام one through fifteen.
Yellow:
· I can greet others and talk about myself نفسي, and my likes and dislikes. السلام عليكم، مرحبا، اهلا وسهلا، صباح الخير، مساء الخير
· I can write sentences in Arabic in correct form.
· I can memorize color الالوان, shape words الاشكال, hobbies الهوايات and numbers الارقامone through twenty.
Science & Social Studies
- Investigation 1:
Part 2: Solid Materials- Students will describe what solid objects can be made of.
Part 3: Group Solid Objects- Students will classify objects by their properties.
Part 4: Construct with Solids- Students will use solid materials to build structures.
Part 5: Outdoor Solids- Students will identify solids in our environment.

Part 2: Properties of Liquids- students will identify properties of liquids.
Part 3: Liquid Level- Students will use tools to measure liquid.
Part 4: Puddles- Students will find puddles in the environment and explore them.
Social Studies:
We are exploring communities, community roles, and our responsibility within our community. Students will be able to link specific community needs to services and actions and identify ways that they can help within their community. Students will understand that communities form to meet the needs of those within it.
Qur'an
Tajweed:
- Recognize the letters and sounds of Arabic alphabets in their initial, middle, and final position.
- Recognize and understand the sound relation of Arabic language (Tanween, Sukoon).
- The importance etiquettes of reciting Qur’an.
Memorization:
- Surat Ad-Duha.
Tafsir
- The general meaning of Surat Ad-Duha.
Islamic Studies
- First pillar of Islam (SHAHADA).
- How to make wudu and save water.
- Etiquette of eating.
- Learn about childhood of the prophet until the splitting of the chest story.
- Describe the qualities of a good friend.
- Stories and lessons from prophets Hud and Nuh.
Art
- Manipulate art media, material, and tools safely.
- ·Identify color, line, shape, texture, form, space, and selected principles of design, such as pattern, repetition, and contrast in artworks that convey what they see, know, and feel
- Create artworks that explore the uses of color, line, shape, texture, form, and selected principles of design, such as pattern, repetition, and contrast to express personal meaning
