Don't Forget!!

Parent Conferences start the week of October 6th. You should have been emailed a sign up sheet to choose a time that works best for you. Please contact your student's teacher if none of the times available work for you!

We will be kicking off our Big Kahuna fundraiser this week. More information will be sent home in your child's BEE folder. Please let us know if you have any questions!

Readers, Writers, Social Studies

In Readers Workshop we have been focusing on what good readers do. This means we read every day, we read a lot, and we reread our books for understanding! We are also able to make text to self connections to our texts. Don't forget about our MILLION WORD CHALLENGE!! Have your child read 1-2 books with you every night at home and write it on the reading log.

In Writers Workshop we are working on adding details to our writing and writing for a purpose! This includes rereading our work for clarity, taking risks in writing, and using self-conferences to work towards our writing goals.

In Social Studies we are focused on being GOOD CITIZENS! We have been talking about good citizenship since the beginning of school. We are also learning how to locate Texas and the United States on a map or a globe.

Math Workshop

In math we are working on grouping tens and ones! We have focused on our new Stepping Stones Curriculum and have been working towards using ten frames and ordering numbers from 10-19. We also use this time to PROBLEM SOLVE! We have problem solving questions that our students work independently on as well as with partners, groups, or all together.

Here is an example of one of our problem solving questions: Maggie and Abby have 8 cookies to share among themselves. They decide that they do not need to receive the same number of cookies but each person should get at least one. How many different ways can they share the cookies?

In science we are discussing PROPERTIES! We have just completed a unit on properties of matter that include shape, texture, color, size, and weight. We enjoyed doing different experiments to see if items sink or float, are rough or smooth, or heavy or light. Our next unit will be matter and energy. How do you know if something is hot or cold? What about warm or cool? We can't wait to figure out how heating and cooling changes matter!

Penny War and Pink Out Day!

We just wanted to say THANK YOU to all who participated in our penny war and pink out day! Peterson Elementary raised over $2,000 for the Susan G. Komen Foundation. We love seeing you be a part of something much bigger than our school!
