Welcome May

We would like to give a warm welcome to Mrs. Nicole Venne, our new secretary in the guidance office. Last week was her first full week and we are so happy to have her here! Most of April was spent completing course requests for next years schedule along with some classroom guidance (Career Cruising-10th grade) a field trip (SUNY North Country Day-11th grade) and trainings/workshops for the counselors. We have some exciting opportunities coming up this month, including a workshop for parents and students on the Excelsior Scholarship, a workshop geared for 10th grade parents and some in school opportunities for students.

Excelsior Scholarship Workshop-IMPORTANT INFORMATION!

We will have two representatives from Clinton Community College here to give an informational session on the Excelsior Scholarship. This scholarship will be awarded for freshmen entering a college within the SUNY and CUNY system (this includes community colleges) and our current seniors are eligible. This workshop is also applicable to current juniors and sophomores that are beginning to think about the college search process and want to know about free tuition offered at New York State institutions. The application opens the end of May for our current seniors and will only be open for a limited time. This is definitely a night you do not want to miss so please join us in the LGI on May 31st at 6:00pm.

AP Exams

Advanced Placement Exams begin tomorrow. Please see important dates below to determine what date your child will be testing. All of our AP exams this year are morning exams and will begin after homeroom.

SUNY North Country Day

Juniors attended a recent field trip to SUNY Plattsburgh to participate in SUNY North Country Day. The students found the field trip to be very worthwhile. Students learned about the college application process, programs that are offered at SUNY Plattsburgh, asked questions of a student panel and took a tour of the campus.

Career Fair

The morning of Tuesday May 23rd our high school students will have the opportunity to attend the career fair put on by our middle school. Representatives from over 30 businesses and colleges will be represented.

Coryer Staffing to speak with our 12th graders

During our half day on Wednesday May 17th, Rick Goerlitz and David Coryea from Coryea Staffing will be meeting with all of our seniors during their economics or government class. Rick and David will share how they can help with the job search process for those entering the work force immediately upon graduation as well as how they can help those students that plan to work while they are in college.

Parent Night for 10th graders

We will be holding a parent night for our sophomore students on Thursday May 18th at 6:30pm in the LGI. We will include information about graduation requirements, and importance of junior year. We will also have a college admissions counselor from the University of Vermont to share information on applying to college in general as well as applying to competitive colleges.

Career Cruising with our 10th graders

Mrs. Rosenbaum and Mr. Ehrlich worked with 10th graders last week to begin the career exploration process. Students began with a career interest inventory and were then able to link results with the education needed for specific careers and where that education could be obtained. The students can access this information at any time and continue the exploration process both in and outside of the classroom. Students will use these plans during yearly individual sessions in the guidance office to help for life after high school.

IMPORTANT CHANGE FOR SAT

Beginning this summer students can take an August SAT and the registration deadline is July 28th. A January SAT will no longer be offered. If your child is a junior please make sure he/she has signed up for a June or August SAT.
