Santan Quarterly Report
December 2016
Keep Calm & Storm On!
Letter from the "Editor"... Mrs. Kowalinski
Dear Santan Parents & Students:
This is such a wonderful time of year. We have so many festive things to look forward to this month with choir, band, orchestra concerts, play-off games and our winter break.
A heartfelt thank you to our Booster’s Board, Deb Georgvich, Nicole Pyle, Melissa Peck and Jody Zvada for their hard work this semester. We have fund-raised over $10,000 for our shading structure and a variety of other things, such as teacher meals, student field trips, supplies, t-shirts, etc. As parents, your generous contributions afforded us these opportunities. Thank you for helping us reach closer and closer to our goal!
Happy Holidays to all of our families! Although this quarter takes us closer and closer to the end of the month, please try to plan your vacation time around the school calendar so it optimizes your child’s learning time in class. The two full weeks should provide you and your family quality time to venture out into the mountains, snow and relatives in other states. I hope your holidays are safe and prosperous. We will look forward to your return on January 10, 2017!
Merry Mistletoe and Happy Holly!
Educationally yours,
BJ Kowalinski, Santan Jr. High Principal

SJHS PE DEPARTMENT ROCKS!!!
Dana Davis, Tom Calendo and Randy Conrad presented at this year's AZHPE Convention on November 2nd at the Phoenix Convention Center. From the PE teachers:
"Our presentation topic is how we implemented the Sport Education Model into our existing flag football unit. The model theme is designed around the NCAA College Bowl Series idea. Students are placed on teams by a selection committee. Each member of the team has a role or responsibility to fulfill for the team. For example, each team will have a fitness instructor. His/her responsibility will be to lead his/her team members through fitness activities prior to their practice. In addition, each team will have a coach. The coach is responsible for leading a practice session and providing other necessary leadership responsibilities. Other roles include equipment manager, statistician and assistant coach. The season consists of a few days with the teachers instructing and guiding skills, game format, referee training and strategy. The next 7 days, teams will play in a round robin. Using the results from the round robin teams are placed into 3 different bowl series to ensure competitive
double elimination brackets. Students are awarded for winning their bracket and for things like good sportsmanship and being excellent referees. We conclude our season/unit with a day of students vs. staff games and a tailgate gathering."
SJHS'S OWN PEACE POSTER WINNER
The Peace Poster contest is sponsored by the Lions Club. Each year, Lions Clubs around the world proudly sponsor this contest in local schools and youth groups. This year's theme was "A Celebration of Peace." The winner receives a cash prize and is entered into the international contest. SJHS is very proud of our student, Alexandra Lee, who is pictured above with her parents and her award-winning Peace Poster. Congratulations Alexandra!!

AZMERIT STATE TESTING
What is AzMERIT?
The AzMERIT test has been developed by Arizona educators to give teachers a better idea of how students are doing in reading, writing and math.
Why do we need a test?
AzMERIT is like an annual checkup—an important opportunity to find out how your child is doing. Just as doctors check height and weight, teachers use the test to check how your child is doing in reading, writing and math.
Who takes the tests?
Students in 3rd grade through high school will take the AzMERIT test this spring. High school students will be given at the end of their courses, similar to a final exam.
How do I help my child prepare?
All of the work your child has been doing in the classroom this year has helped prepare him/her for this test. Every project, assignment and discussion has helped teach your child critical thinking and problem solving skills.
As a parent, one of the most important things you can do is to talk with your child about the assessment to help minimize any fear or anxiety your child may be feeling. You can even take a practice test with your child at home to become more familiar with the format and types of questions that will be asked. Another important thing you can do, is to check in regularly with your child’s teacher about his/her progress to see where your child needs more help or where he/she is ready to learn even more.
Learn more about the test and what your child needs to know to be successful at
http://ArizonaAimsHigher.org/AzMERIT
Computer testing for AzMERIT is March 27th-May 5th. Writing must be complete by April 21st.
ACT Aspire is currently scheduled for May 15th-19th.
How Does My Child Qualify for National Honor Society for the 2017-18 school year?
-Must be enrolled in at least one higher level course, either one honor's or CATS class
-Must earn A's and no more than 2 B's on quarter 1, 2, and 3 report cards.
-Less than 3 CARE referrals
-No office referrals
-Complete a student application packet
-2 teacher letters of recommendation
Students will be eligible to apply after spring break. Applications and teacher recommendation forms will be available online after spring break and students will be able to complete the packet, print the letters to give their teachers, and submit their forms. The official dates will be released after spring break, put on school announcements, and on our website. It is the student’s responsibility to be informed of the deadlines and informational packets.
Did you know that Santan is an AVID school?
AVID is a fourth- through twelfth-grade system to prepare students for four-year college eligibility. It has a proven track record in bringing out the best in students, and in closing the achievement gap. AVID stands for Advancement Via Individual Determination.
AVID targets students in the academic middle – B, C, and even D students – who have the desire to go to college and the willingness to work hard. These are students who are capable of completing rigorous curriculum but are falling short of their potential. Typically, they will be the first in their families to attend college, and many are from low-income or minority families. AVID pulls these students out of their unchallenging courses and puts them on the college track: acceleration instead of remediation.
Santan Junior High’s cafeteria has recently been decorated with a variety of inspirational pennants with some of our favorite colleges and universities. We are proud to be an AVID school!
