MNMS Distance Learning Information

November 16, 2020

Please remember to report all exposures/close-contacts, quarantines, isolations and/or positive cases to us at COVID19@mustangops.org. This will be vitally important during this time of Distance Learning so that we can keep a pulse on our local data and make well-informed decisions about our return to in-person schooling.

Transitioning to Distance Learning

Mustang North Students and Parents,

On 11/16/2020, our MNMS Distance Learning Plan will go into effect. This newsletter contains the information you will need if your student will be engaging in the online distance learning option, or if they will be using the offline (paper copies) distance learning option. We understand that there will be questions as we make this transition. If, after reading this newsletter you still have questions, please fill out the google form linked at the bottom of the newsletter. Please provide accurate and up-to-date contact information so that someone from our staff can get back to you with assistance.

We ask for your patience, your grace, and your understanding as we work together through this together. Our staff will be working hard to make the most of the circumstances and continue to uphold our mission of ensuring high levels of learning for all, even from a distance. Thank you for your continued support!

November 16, 17, 18 - "Go Packets"

All students at school on Friday received "Go Packets" before leaving. This is the work that should be completed during these first 3 days of Distance Learning. If students were not at school on Friday, parents may stop by the MNMS Front Office this week 8:30 a.m. - 3:45 p.m. to pick up the packet. They are also attached below if you would rather print the packet at home. Students should complete the packet and then hang on to it. It will need to be turned back into their teachers on the first day back at school in face-to-face instruction.

Online Learning Plan - Beginning Thursday, November 19

Students and teachers will be utilizing Canvas, the learning management system, during this Distance Learning time to communicate assignments, activities, instructional videos, give feedback, etc.. Teachers have been using Canvas weekly in class since the beginning of the school year, so students should be very familiar and comfortable with using it to access the information needed in each class each day.

Assignments: This option provides a near-seamless transition into distance learning as students will simply log on to their Canvas platform each day, watch any instructional videos posted, and complete and submit the assigned activities for each class. They can expect to spend a minimum of 20-30 minutes on each course per day, Monday through Friday. All completed assignments will be submitted via Canvas. Teachers will communicate with students through Canvas as well.

Teacher Availability: Beginning, Thursday, November 19, teachers will follow the schedule listed below to have a Google Meet with each of their classes. Students will access the code to the Meets in their teachers' Canvas. Additional Google Meets may be scheduled as needed by teachers to provide further instruction and/or answer questions. Teachers will then be available from 12:45 - 3:30 p.m. Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday to take parent/student phone calls/emails to answer questions and provide learning support. Wednesdays are reserved for professional development and planning for the following week.

Student Schedule: Students will be expected to follow the schedule below via Google Meet with their teachers Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday. The Google Meet codes are below. Students will also be able to see the code to join the Google Meet in each of their teachers' Canvas. Instructional videos will be posted, so this will be a time, on the given days, to get help or clarification on lessons and instruction. Students will follow their regular school schedule using the following times:

1st Hour: 9:30 am - 9:45 am

2nd Hour: 9:50 am - 10:05 am

3rd Hour: 10:10 am - 10:25 am

4th Hour: 10:30 am - 10:45 am

5th Hour: 10:50 am - 11:05 am

6th Hour: 11:10 am - 11:25 am

7th Hour: 11:30 am - 11:45 am

BAT Class: 11:50 am - 12:05 pm

Grading: Teachers will collect students' work and provide timely grades and feedback to students throughout distance learning. The grading/assessment procedures will mirror the grading procedures/structures used in the traditional classroom setting.

Attendance: Attendance will be based on assignments that are completed and submitted. While students are highly encouraged to attend the Google Meets taking place 4 days a week with each class, students will not be counted "absent" if they cannot attend a Meet due to unavoidable circumstances. As long as work is consistently being completed and submitted back to teachers, students will not be counted absent.

Big picture

Students can expect to spend approximately 20-30 minutes per course/per day on the assigned activities.

Changing Your Distance Learning Plan:

At the beginning of the year, we asked you to complete a survey letting us know what form of learning you would need in the event we switched to distance learning. If you need to change the distance learning plan for your child, you may do so by completing this form.

(For example: you now have access to the technology needed to engage in the online plan or you no longer want to pick up packets in person and would like them emailed instead, etc.) An administrator will be in contact with you if you change to this option.

Meal Service

MNMS Students will be able to receive meals Monday - Friday from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm on the EAST side of MNMS. Click HERE for a map showing the location for meal service.

Athletics and Extracurricular Activities

Athletics and extracurricular activities will not be able to compete or practice in person during Distance Learning. Coaches/sponsors will communicate with participants with any necessary information during this time.

Student Medications

If you are needing your child's medication that is being stored in the nurse's office, call our front office, and we will make arrangements for the medication to be picked up by a parent.
