Painted Ladies & Other Visitors
This week we observed the Painted Lady butterflies hatch from their chrysalis. We were actually lucky enough to see one come out during math time. After doing some observing, we let the butterflies go in the rain garden. It was fun to watch them fly away. Currently, students are working on a Venn diagram comparing moths and butterflies. To help us understand the difference we separated into groups by clothing color. See the pictures below to see if you can tell who are the moths and who are butterflies! You will find the hanging up on the bulletin board once we are done. An important concept that we have learned while doing this task is to take a bullet point and put it into a complete sentence.
We also had some other visitors in the classroom this week. Some lovely, fuzzy caterpillars brought in by Lauren and Callie. One of the caterpillars still remains in the class as a permanent resident until we can find it. One got loose!
We didn't just have insect visitors this week. PJ's grandma also came to visit our room! She was a second grade teacher for 20 years. She helped out with math centers and read a book to students.
Math Centers-Students Do The Teaching
During one of the centers this week, some students taught others what to do. I taught a few students prior and it was up to them to teach the rest of the class. Learning to communicate, teach each other is something we will work on this school year. Listening will also be practiced. So often students are use to listening to me, but it is very important that they also listen to each other. Our students teachers this week were PJ, Callie, Natalie, Rachel and Sammie. Next week will have new student teachers.
Box Top Contest
The first Box Tops Contest of the school year begins on Monday. There is a friendly contest between classrooms for who gets the most. Classrooms have the opportunity to earn money from PTO if they have the most. If you got them, please send them in! Thanks!
Writer's Workshop
We are almost done writing personal narratives. I have been very impressed with students ability to try strategies that I teach into their own writing. During writer's workshop we use pens to write. Ask your child why!
Our upcoming writing unit is All About Books.
