Social Studies Weekly
Year 5 Volume 10~ November13, 2017
This week's shout out goes to Robert Powell at W-S Prep. At the American 1/2 collaboration session on Saturday, Mr. Powell shared a trick in Word to make graphic organizers: Smart Art. If you were not aware of this convenient tool, check it out. Just open Word and click Insert. Next to shapes, you will see Smart Art. With this tool, you can create custom graphic organizers.
Thanks for sharing Mr. Powell.

World History
By the end of the week, we should be looking at the 1920s and 1930s: the economic issues facing the world and the rise of totalitarian leaders. Here are some CRs to use with the start of this unit.
Civics and Economics
We are knee deep in our economics unit. There are a lot of great resources in Power School Learning, including hands on sorting activities, a bump-a-word, and a scarcity activity that is similar to the trade activity used in unit 7.
Yanawi Quinones just sent this lesson she found on the Economics of Thanksgiving Dinner. Some of the prices are from 1998 but it is really awesome.
Thinking ahead to PFL, remember, EVERFI, is a great resource to use to support the PFL standards. Like any resource, it is only as good as the teacher implementation of the resource. EVERFI should not be used as the sole method of teaching PFL.
American 1
At this point, we are about 1/2 way through Unit 5. We are finishing up the expansion of the nation and getting ready to fight another war. There are numerous readings in Power School Learning (PSL) that were designed for this unit. Check them out and feel free to edit as you desire.
When looking at the Mexican-American War, there are some interesting stories of free black Americans that lived in Texas and how the transition from the Republic of Texas to the state of Texas impacted them.
American 2
This week we are finishing up Unit 6: Early Cold War- Politics and Culture. Try using the Speech Bubbles to have students summarize important aspects of the unit.
For African-American Infusion, look over this article from Teaching Tolerance before teaching about the Brown v. Board of Education decision and its impact on society.
