Fall Box Tops Contest!
It's time to bring in the Box Tops you've been saving and put them in your teacher's collection bag/box. Portuguese classes should give them to their homeroom teacher. Our fall contest will end on Thursday, October 25. The top three classes will win a reward! Thank you for supporting this fundraiser--it only takes 10 Box Tops to earn a dollar for our school!
Another way to help: Turn everyday receipts into extra cash for your school with the Box Tops Bonus App! It features special offers that give you the chance to earn Bonus Box Tops in addition to the Box Tops that you clip from packages. You can email rwgalvez@gmail.com if you earn box tops this way and want them to count toward your child's class.
Reflections Art Contest is Coming Up!
This year the theme for the Reflections art contest is HEROES AROUND ME!
You can submit art, a photo, writing, a film, poetry, and a 3-D piece.
Submissions must be brought to the school on the morning of October 15th. The Reflections Assembly will be on October 25th.

After School Program
Hi Lakeview Lions
After School Program has started and there are slots available. We are still deciding our fall clubs so keep in touch with us on social media!
Like our Facebook page: Lakeview After School Program.
Follow us on Instagram: @lvafterschool
At the After School Program, one of our priorities to provide a stress free environment. That includes finding the perfect instructors who the students feel comfortable with coming to for help with homework, bullying, suggestions, and so forth.
We want as many students as possible to experience this program, this is where you come in! We are giving the chance to sponsor one of our students tuition. This donation would provide a healthy snack every day and supplies for enrichments activities such as art, STEM, etc. A donation like this is a tremendous way to give back to our wonderful Lakeview Elementary and most importantly laying the groundwork for a student's success.
If you are interested, have questions, or would like to donate in other ways please email Molly Woffinden mollyw@provo.edu or go check out our Amazon wish list!

LICE INFORMATION TO PARENTS/GUARDIANS
Head lice are very common and always exist in communities and schools. No school is lice free; just as no school is free of the common cold. After a close look at the scientific evidence available and furnished with new knowledge from experts, we look forward to better serving the students and the families of the Provo City School District.
The purpose of this document is two-fold: to review district protocol and to offer some additional information to you so that the entire community may become better educated on this topic. The protocol regarding head lice can be found on the district website. These documents reflect standard practice as recommended by the Center for Disease Control (CDC), the National Association of School Nurses, and the Harvard School of Public Health.
The current recommendations by medical expert’s state that students with nits and/or head lice should remain in the school and not be immediately excluded.
Why would medical experts recommend this?
1. Head lice are a nuisance, they do not cause disease and are not dangerous to the child or to others. Children
with head lice who are not sick and pose no risk of illness, should not be excluded from school. Children with the common cold, which is easily passed from student to student, are allowed to stay in school.
2. By the time head lice is discovered, this child has usually had them for 3-4 weeks. Therefore, it makes no sense to immediately exclude them from class.
3. No matter how careful staff is to protect the privacy of student, when a student leaves a class and does not return, the assumption is that the student has head lice. This can be unnecessarily embarrassing for the child and family.
4. Most importantly, school is not a high risk area of getting head lice. Over the last 10 years, multiple studies have proven the school rarely is the site of lice transmission. The vast majority of cases of head lice are spread by friends and family members who play or live together. In the rare case when the spread of lice has occurred at school, it is among very young children, in preschool or kindergarten and likely a result of playing closely together in ways that result in head-to-head contact.
5. Head lice elicit an emotional reaction. “No-nit” policies were based on that reaction, not on scientific evidence of lice transmission. Scientific research has informed us that keeping students with nits (eggs) or even head lice, out of school has no effect on the amount of head lice at school. Experts agree that “No-nit” policies are detrimental to the emotional and educational status of the student.
Protocol for Head Lice
1. When there is a report of head lice or if a student is suspected of having head lice, a designated school employee will check the referred student for live lice or nits (eggs). If student is found to have live lice, the siblings of the student may also be checked. Extreme care should be taken to protect the privacy of the student and family.
2. If live lice are found, a parent/guardian will be immediately notified and be provided information about
evidence-based treatment options and steps to follow. Parents of children with head lice are encouraged to talk to other parents of close friends. Parents will not be informed of other children who have head lice in school, as that is a privacy concern and the risk of getting head lice from a classmate is very small.
3. At the parents’ discretion, the student may be checked-out or sent home at the end of the school day. The
student should be treated before returning to school. Head lice should not contribute to student absenteeism; therefore, removal from the classroom is usually unnecessary. If the student returns to class before receiving treatment, it is helpful to limit participation in activities involving head-to-head contact, or sharing of personal items.
4. Students with head lice may be rechecked when returning to school following treatment.
5. Classroom-wide or grade-level lice checks are usually unnecessary. If additional cases of head lice are reported or found in the classroom, the Principal and the school nurse may choose to send home the “Head Lice Information” letter to parents of that class.
6. The designated school employee or school nurse may follow-up on cases of head lice as needed.
Principal's Message for October
Dear Lakeview Families,
I want to express my thanks for your support of our Lakeview Picnic. We had a great turnout and it was fun to meet so many of you. The dancers were terrific and the book share was a big hit. I want to send a special thank you to the PTA and everyone that helped out. It is great to have the support of so many people.
There are a couple of things that have us concerned. In the past week we have had some close calls between cars and students biking to school. Please review bicycle safety rules with your student. If you are driving near the school, please slow down and be patient. With the new high school around the corner from us, we have seen a big increase in traffic and we want to keep everyone safe. We would also like to remind the students that if they ride their bike to school, they should be locking it up in the bike rack. We have had some theft reported to us and a good bike lock can prevent that.
The school district has also asked us to evaluate the safety procedures at our school. We are asking that if you need to be in the building for any reason, please check in at the office and get a visitor pass. We need to know who is in the building at all times. If you have a high school student, please remind them not to cut through our campus or fields. No unauthorized person should be on the school grounds during the school day.
One last thing I would like to share. We have implemented some changes regarding behavior at the school. Each teacher and grade level has its own plan for classroom management. That plan usually helps student manage their behavior and succeed in school. However, if a behavior problem persists, we now have a room we are calling the Life Skills Room (LSR) where a teacher can send a student to get some extra help managing inappropriate behavior. When they arrive at the LSR, they will work with Mrs. Thompson, our LSR coordinator. She will review their behavior, have them evaluate what is going wrong, and make a plan for change. Depending on the behavior, appropriate consequences are given. Parents are always called when a student has been in the LSR. We know that parents are the biggest factor in helping to change behavior and we want to always be working as a team. Thankfully, it is only a small percentage of our students that will ever need this extra help but I wanted you to be aware that it is available when needed.
We have so many great things happening at the school! We try to share those on social media and our webpage. I hope you are able to check those out. The students and teachers are working very hard and are having great success. Thanks for supporting us in all we are trying to do! I am grateful to be a Lakeview Lion!
Sincerely,
Mr. Barker
