Counselor's Corner
During our first lesson with Dr. Hickey we talked about the wide variety of feelings that we have. We identified feelings that are easy to have and feelings that are hard to have, and we talked about what physically happens in our body when we feel different ways. During our second lesson we focused on the parts of our brain (pre-frontal cortex, amygdala, and brain stem). We learned that when our upstairs and downstairs brains are communicating, we can think and learn, but sometimes our feelings (downstairs brain) take over and we "flip our lid." We have to calm down before our thinking brain (upstairs brain) can be in charge again. Ask your child to show you the hand brain model and the parts of the brain!
Right now we are learning about self-regulation by identifying when our "engine" is running too slow, too fast, or just right. We are discussing ways we can move from too slow or too fast to just right so that we can focus on what we are doing and be successful. Ask your child, "How is your engine running?"
