Math Updates
PLEASE try to have your child practice his/her subtraction math facts every night at home for at least 5-10 minutes. You can practice with the Xtra math website, EDM games like Subtraction Top-it, flash cards, or just calling out facts and recording the ones that need to be worked on. The second trimester goal is to get 60 correct in two minutes for a score of a 3.
In Math this week, we learned all about polygons, area and perimeter. First we learned all about the properties of different polygons. Then we zoomed into quadrilaterals, or four sided polygons and learned about them. Then we learned that the perimeter is the measure of the outside "rim" (pe"rim"eter) of the shape. We practiced measuring to the nearest 1/2 inch while finding perimeter. Finally we ended the week learning about area. Area is the measure of the square inches (or other measure being used) within the shape. You can either add up the squares inside the shape (if they are drawn) or multiply two adjacent sides to find the area of a quadrilateral.
Building a READING LIFE
In Reading this week, we discussed how fiction books are like mystery books. We ended the Mystery unit by playing a mystery game. The kids had a blast and are ready to start our Reading poetry unit next week.
Word Study
Word Study tests will be on Friday, December 7th.
Monday nights- Students are to sort their words and record them in their notebooks. They are to also record their discovery or rule for the week.
Tuesday and Wednesday nights- Students should sort their words and read them as they sort. They can practice writing them on paper, whiteboards, or typing them. NO WRITTEN homework is required on these nights.
Thursday nights- Students are to ask an adult to quiz them on their words. They write the headers and then record the words as they are called out. The adult should use the notebook to correct the sort and ask the student to practice any words that were spelled incorrectly. This can be done on the back of the homework sheet. This paper should then be returned to school Friday morning.
Friday- there will be a test given
