Respect Challenge Update
Here are Respect Challenge final results for last year. We had the best quarter ever the first nine weeks. We did not make our goal in the other three quarters. This is disappointing, but it important to remember that we were trying to beat some very high expectations. Discipline Numbers have been tracked every quarter for 11 years and we were trying to have the best quarter each nine weeks.
While we only met one goal, we did achieve something else. When all four quarters are added up, we had our best year ever. Other years had better quarter two, three, or four, but none was as consistently good as last year. We dropped our discipline issues to a total of 931.5 last year. Since 2006-17 when our numbers were 1785, we have lowered issues by 47.9%!
Kind Initiative
We are instituting a new challenge for our students this year revolving around kindness. As you know, we have conducted a Respect Challenge for the past few years, in an attempt to reduce discipline issues. You can see above that the students did an amazing job last year! With that said, we believe the Respect Challenge has taken us as far as we can. If we are as low as we can get (discipline numbers wise), using the same program and not making much (or any) progress could have the students feeling defeated.
So we are going the opposite direction (record positive acts instead of reducing negative). We will be recording acts of kindness of every student. Each act will be written on a strip of paper with the child’s name. It will then be attached and become part of a visible paper chain that starts in the main office hallway and travels through the halls. Reaching certain locations in school will result in rewards (possibly something for the end of year field day). The more acts of kindness, the longer and faster the chain grows.
There are other pieces to this initiative, but the chain is the focus. While we have done a 180 in theme, we are really continuing our journey to be the best possible school and students that we can be. We just felt it was time to change direction. I will keep you posted.
Safety Concern
Please remember that students (walking to school) and also Father Stan may be walking in the back parking lot during drop-off. Driving through the parking lot at a slow speed helps keep everyone safe. This becomes even more important in the fall when the mornings get darker. Thank you.

Eclipse Update and pictures
Your kids are awesome! They all followed directions while outside viewing the eclipse, as well as during dismissal. It was a nice event for them to experience and I appreciate all of the staff making sure the students were safe.
Mr. Moeller
7th and 8th Grade Eclipse Activity
Seventh and eighth graders were transformed into reporters in their language arts class as they experienced their first solar eclipse. Students began the week by thinking like a reporter and generating a class list of all of the questions that they had about the solar eclipse. They then did some research to find answers to their questions and wrote scripts that will be used in their own personal newscasts later this week. Live reporters were then on the scene of the eclipse to share their real-time experience with their viewers.
Our goal was to incorporate solid voice, fluency, and word choice in our writing and speaking and to connect our students with real-world experiences and audiences.

Musical Notes
The Band Rental Night with Paige’s Music will be Monday, August 28 at 6:00 PM in the café. This is an opportunity to meet with our music representative and learn about the instrument rental program. Any student in grades 5-8 who wishes to join band should attend with a parent. If you have questions, you may call or email Miss Kushman.
First grade had a lot of fun getting some of the instruments out this week! We came up with new words as our cues. For one class, the maracas played on rock, the other class chose shake. It was a lot of fun to play our instruments on our cues!

Homework Table
This year the homework table is located on the heater to the right of the office door. Urgent Care donated red homework bags for the teachers to put materials in for absent students. When picking up absent work, you may want to check and make sure your child's sick work is in the bag. If there aren't many materials to be sent home, the teacher may just have a paper or two on the heater.
Library News--Birthday Book forms
The Birthday Book forms will be handed out during your child's Library class. If your child will be participating in the Birthday book program please fill them out and return to the Library by Sept. 4th.
