Chinmaya Organization for Rural Development @ American University is hosting a Charity Gala to fundraise for both a 1.5 month summer service trip to a village in Tamaraipakkam, Tamil Nadu, and for refurbishments to a computer lab used by the community there. We have planned an extraordinary night of Indian classical arts from Bharatanatyam, a dance form originating in the ancient temples of Tamil Nadu, to Hindustani music, an artform made famous by its prevalence in the Mughal era, to Kathak, a dance form tracing its origins to the nomadic bards of ancient northern India.

Performers include noted artists in the DC and international communities.

Nistha Raj is a distinguished Hindustani violin teacher and performer, having performed for the United Nations, the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, and the Indian Embassy in DC. Internationally, she has performed at the US embassies in Poland, Canada, and Colombia.

Puja Balachander is a Bharatanatyam dancer who has performed extensively in CA, DC, and India, and completed her solo-debut performance in 2012.

Ashyka Dave has 17 years of professional training in Kathak dance, a classical North Indian art form that involves fast rhythmical footwork, pirouettes, vivid facial expressions, delicate hand gestures and body movements. She has over 15 years of performing nationally and internationally in prestigious dance festivals and venues.

Dr. Yamini Saripalli is a disciple of Dr. Vempati Chinna Satyam and Sri Vempati Ravi Shankar. She has performed extensively at various world venues including the Kennedy Center, Washington D.C., Milapfest, Manchester, England, Ravindra Bharathi, Hyderabad, India and the Chennai Music and Dance Season. Yamini is both an active performer and teacher.
