CVU Celebrations
February 3, 2023
Dear CVU Community: As February 1 marks the beginning of Black History Month, I thank CVSD's DEI team members Dr. Asma Abunaib, Bageshree Blasius, and Christina Deeley for their continued efforts to shape a more equitable, inclusive, and just CVU. I share their words (and their commitment) below:
February is recognized as Black History Month, but we know that Black History is more than a month. Our CVU community is alive with Black History and Culture; it can be felt, heard, and seen in the music we listen to, the stories we read and watch when we explore local history, and most importantly, in our students and families.
CVU is committed to making sure our students are able to learn about Black History and Culture not just in February, but all year long. Our students are learning about race and identity, reading Black authors, and have access to increasingly diverse Social Studies curriculum options, including a course specifically about Black American History. All students, regardless of race, benefit from culturally responsive educational opportunities. Families can join students in this learning by accessing the plethora of resources available via the internet.
And, these are only the first steps. We recognize that we have a long way to go. When our Racial Alliance Committee student leaders raised the Black Lives Matter flag in 2019 it was a moment of celebration. Now the flag serves as a visual reminder of how much work still needs to be done.
Racist incidents in our community and around the state demonstrate that we need to participate in critical conversations, acknowledge our mistakes, and continue to reevaluate and make changes to our systems.
We at CVU commit to doing the difficult work of changing systems, teaching hard history, and recognizing Black Joy and Hope.
“This hope is our door, our portal.
Even if we never get back to normal,
Someday we can venture beyond it,
To leave the known and take the first steps.
So let us not return to what was normal,
But reach toward what is next.”
~ Amanda Gorman, excerpt from “New Day’s Lyric”

We hope to introduce students to the complexities of starting, owning, and sustaining a small business. We will be visiting businesses for approximately an hour to learn about your businesses and to ask questions about the process of starting a business. If you or someone you know might be interested in hosting us or would like more information - please reach out to Lianna or Deb at lreed@cvsdvt.org or dnewellrobinson@cvsdvt.org.

This past Saturday, RoboHawk members Crawford Phillips, Jared Kennedy, and Sam Yager helped mentor 6 teams from the CVSD district at the FLL Championship competition. There were Lego robotics teams from WCS, SCS, HCS and CCS!!! This was a HUGE victory for the RoboHawks who worked very hard to get these teams funded and off the ground and had mentored all season with multiple trips into the middle schools! RoboHawks will be back in action on Saturday Feb 11th at CVU. CVU will be hosting the Vermont State FTC Robotics Championships from 9am to 5pm. There will be robotics teams from all over the state competing for a chance to qualify for the World Championship in Houston Texas.CVU will have two strong teams in the competition this year. Please come out to see the amazing work and learning that these kids have done!

Community Celebrations/Notes
As you all are aware, CVSD recently completed a district Equity Audit in the fall of 2022. One of the first recommendations from the audit is for CVSD to create a shared vision/ understanding for Diversity Equity and Inclusion (DEI) work at CVSD. In order to create this shared understanding, district DEI coaches have gathered input from faculty and staff at each school. This input, along with the equity audit results, will be used by the DEI team to create a draft document of a shared vision for DEI work in our district. The shared vision draft will explain the focus of CVSD DEI work and provide collective definitions. We would like to form a district wide community committee to give us additional input and feedback on the shared vision draft. We hope to have 17-20 members on this committee, including teachers, students, parents, community members, support staff, and administrators. We are planning on forming the committee by the end of January, sharing the draft document with the committee by February 1 and then holding a 2 hour, hybrid meeting in mid February for committee members to share feedback. We will try to provide childcare during this meeting. If you are interested in participating on the committee, please contact CVU DEI coaches Christina Deeley (cdeeley@cvsdvt.org) or Bageshree Blasius (bblasius@cvsdvt.org.)."

Please view this set of slides, which were shared at last week's virtual Town Hall, and then use this form to share your thoughts. These links are also available on the Strategic Planning page of the district's website. Please contribute your input by February 15. Thank you!
