In 2015-16, students will receive an iPad!

Thank you Petaluma voters. In 2014, you passed a bond that is helping us move education to bigger and better things. We need to change what we are doing to help students learn the skills they need for 21st century jobs and to engage them in their education.

Each student in Petaluma City Schools will receive an iPad in August to use for the year. We have learned a lot from the Chromebook use in 8th grade this year and will use this knowledge to help us continue to move forward to teaching in the 21st century.

You will receive more information in the months to come. There will be online videos to walk you through the who, what, when and why of iPads. There will be parent meetings that you will have the opportunity to attend. There will be information on Orientation Day and throughout the year.

Teachers will be attending many training sessions over the summer to prepare themselves for this new adventure in education.

Feel free to contact Ms. Dunnagan or Mr. Holley with any questions.

8th grade promotion is around the corner!

Believe it or not, 8th grade Promotion is just around the corner. The 8th grade promotion ceremony will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, June4. Students will be wearing promotion gowns for the ceremony that the school will provide. I will be sending out more specific information as the date gets closer. For now, it is important to realize that the promotion ceremony will require students to walk across the grass and up and down stairs. Safe, comfortable walking shoes are a must. GATES OPEN at 9:15am for seating.

The 8th grade end of the year dance will be on Wednesday, June 3 from

6:30-9:00 p.m. We are recommending nice, casual dress for this dance. Suggested attire is a collared shirt and nice pants for young men, skirts or nice pants for young women. Students will need to abide by the Kenilworth Junior High dress code. Spaghetti straps, halter-tops and strapless dresses are not allowed. Ladies who have such outfits will need to wear a jacket or sweater to cover up. Students must wear shoes throughout the dance, so please plan to wear shoes you can dance in! If you have any questions, please call us. We can arrange to look at the outfit prior to the dance.

Discipline Guidelines for Last Weeks of School for 8th Graders

1. SUSPENSIONS - (Major or Minor): Suspension of 2 or more days – loss of 8th Grade Day at Boys’ and Girls’ Club. Any 5-day suspension will mean no Promotion Ceremony, loss of Promotion Dance and 8th grade day at the Boy’s and Girl’s Club.

A) Students with 10 or MORE demerits this school year that receive 2 MORE from this date on will lose the 8th grade day at the Boy’s and Girl’s Club or the Promotion Dance. 3 MORE referrals from this date on will lose both the Boy’s and Girl’s Club and the Promotion Dance. Parents will be notified when this occurs.

B) Students with LESS than 10 demerits this year that receives 3 MORE from this date on will lose the 8th grade Dance; 4 MORE referrals from this date on will lose both the Boys’ and Girls’ Club and Dance. UNDER DISCIPLINE ON THE PARENT PORTAL IS WHERE YOU WILL FIND CURRENT DEMERIT NUMBERS.

3. Students who are deficient too many credits to attend the Promotion Ceremony may be allowed to attend one or both the end of year activities. Students will be looked at on an individual basis, taking into account their discipline record. If a student who is not promoting displays behavior that is disruptive to the educational setting between April 22, 2015 and June 4, 2015 could be placed on Independent Study for the remainder of the school year.

Philosophy for the above guidelines is:

Rules need to be followed until the last day of school. Some students feel that the last few weeks of school are fun days and rules do not really apply. If a student continues to violate the school rules, then that student chooses to lose part or all of the end of Junior High reward activities (8th Boys’ and Girls’ Club, 8th grade dance, and possibly 8th Grade Promotion Exercises).
