News & Notes from Mrs. Kapuchuck
Dear Families,
Last night we set our clocks forward and the forecast is calling for spring like temperatures this week. Spring sports are starting and our children will all be out playing a little longer with extended daylight hours. How are we already at this point in the year?! Last week, we celebrated Dr. Seuss week and this week, we continue our March Madness Book Tournament! Ask your child which book is their favorite so far!
Innovation & Changes in RCPS!
Please continue to stay up to date with RCPS changes in the TA school district! You can click on this link to stay up to date (it is also below). The shortened school day will give teachers additional collaborative planning time in order to redesign the learning environment for our students. At MVES, we pride ourselves in being innovative, collaborative, and dedicated to meeting the needs of every child. This takes a considerable amount of time and thought on behalf of every teacher as they design and implement meaningful lessons in the classroom. On any given day, there is project based learning happening in our classrooms and our teachers spend countless hours planning and preparing for these lessons in order to bring learning to life for our children. If you have questions about the pilot, please refer to the link above. You may also use that link to add your own comments, concerns, praises, and questions!
** As emailed yesterday, there will not be a vote at the Monday, March 9th School Board meeting at MMS.
Book Vending Machine
When you come into our school, check out the new Book Vending Machine! This machine was purchased by the PTO. I have given each classroom teacher tokens for students who have February and March birthdays to come up and select a book. In addition, students receiving Eagle Awards will get a token for a book as well as any student staff members feel is demonstrating our motto of "Be the Difference" through their words and actions. Thanks to YOUR help in purchasing Smencils for your children, we were able to purchase books for the vending machine! Students have been so excited with the selections so far and it couldn't have been done without all of the money your children raised by purchasing Smencils. THANK YOU! I also want to give a special thanks to Ms. Shaffer and Ms. Alex for spending hours stocking this machine! Check out pictures of the vending machine on Facebook!
Student Leadership
Did you know that MVES has a student run coffee and snack cart? Students have taken on a leadership role to run this cart on Mondays and Wednesdays. This has instilled a sense of pride and purpose in our students. We are thankful for Ms. Brubaker and her work with these students!
Lysol and Clorox wipe donations:
Cold and flu season doesn't seem to be leaving anytime soon. We are in need of additional Clorox and Lysol wipes. If you are willing to donate, please send these to the front office so that we can make sure teachers who need them get them, including specials and resource teachers.
As parents we have paid attention a bit more conscientiously to the emerging COVID-19 virus that has spread around many countries in the world and throughout many U.S. states. Some students are becoming increasingly aware of general details of the virus -- likely because of conversations they have had with their families. The following resource provides a general presentation of the details, questions and concerns that children and students might have.

** Change in calendar below: Wednesday Eagle Clubs for grades 3-5 will run from 3:00-4:15 instead of 3:00-4:00. Book Buddies and Running Eagles will still go from 3:00-4:00.
"Time is free, but it's priceless. You can't own it, but you can use it. You can't keep it, but you can spend it. Once you've lost it, you can never get it back."

Have a great week!

Pre-K and Kindergarten Registration
MVES will have Pre-K and Kindergarten Registrations on the following two days in March:
Monday, March 9, 2020 -- from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.
Tuesday, March 10, 2020 -- from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.
WE WILL NOT START ANY REGISTRATION UNTIL ALL INFORMATION IS PROVIDED
KINDERGARTEN REGISTRATIONS:
Registration for Kindergarten will be completed on-line at the school. If your child was in our Pre-K program all information is still needed to update our records.
To be eligible for next year's Kindergarten enrollment, a student must be FIVE (5) YEARS OLD on or before September 30, 2020. No exceptions are granted for this age deadline.
Parents of eligible Kindergarten students must bring the child's Birth Certificate and a recent official document showing Proof of Residence in the MVES school district (Mortgage or lease agreement, utility bill, tax form, etc.). Addresses with P.O. Boxes are not accepted.
A school physical must be provided prior to starting school and has to be dated within 12 months of starting school. Pre-K students currently at MVES still need to have a physical done prior to starting Kindergarten.
PRE-KINDERGARTEN APPLICATION:
Application for Pre-Kindergarten will be completed on-line at the school.
If the Pre-K child is eligible for a Pre-K screening, an appointment will be scheduled for another day later in March. To be eligible for next year's Pre-Kindergarten consideration at MVES, a student must be FOUR (4) YEARS OLD on or before September 30, 2020. No exceptions are granted for this age deadline.
Parents of eligible Pre-Kindergarten students must bring the child's Birth Certificate and a recent document showing Proof of Residence in the MVES school district (Mortgage or lease agreement, utility bill, tax form, etc.). Addresses with P.O. Boxes are not accepted.
In addition, Proof of Household Income Documents (pay stub, W-2, Tax Returns, etc) need to be provided for all adults living in the home reflecting income that supports the Pre-Kindergarten child. Pre-K Screenings cannot take place until these required income documents are submitted.
Admission into Pre-Kindergarten at MVES requires an interview with the child's parents or guardians and a developmental screening from a Pre-K teacher. Parents or guardians of Pre-K children are notified before the end of this current school year whether their child is admitted into Pre-Kindergarten or will be listed on a Waiting List for possible admission at a later time.
A pre-school physical must be provided prior to starting school and has to be dated within 12 months of starting school.
KIDS HEART CHALLENGE
Upcoming Musical Performance
Dear Parents,
All students in 4th and 5th grade will be performing in a Fine Arts/Musical Performance showcase. We are so excited to share our hard work from Art and Music class! All students in grades 4 and 5 will participate in a class musical performance and all students will also have art in the Art Show. The students have been practicing as an ensemble so it is important that everyone attends both performances so that all the parts of the song(s) we have been practicing are there.

THE FLU
Flu season is officially here at MVES. Over the past few weeks, we have had an increase in illness and confirmed cases of the flu. Here at school, we are encouraging frequent hand washing and our custodians are working hard to keep all spaces sanitized. As always, your child should stay home from school if he/she has a fever greater than 100 degrees F and should not return to school until he/she has been fever-free without the use of fever-reducing medicine for at least 24 hours. See the flu guides attached.
Please, as always, call the school or send an email to mvesattendance@rockingham.k12.va.us if your child will be absent from school.
Thank you so much for all of your help in keeping our students healthy! Please feel free to contact Leslie Kapuchuck and/or Nurse Wanda if you have any questions at 540-438-1965.
