Fulton Science Academy
ACCREDITED AND STEM CERTIFIED COLLEGE PREP GIFTED SCHOOL
Week of May 17, 2020
Principal's Corner
Dear FSA Community,
It's really hard to believe that we are in our last week of school for this academic year. It was truly a year like no other. As we enter into this final week of the 2019-2020 School Year, I think it is important to reflect back on the year. We began the year with "normal" expectations and even a few hopes and dreams for things that we may have wanted to happen this year. We made plans and preparations. We gathered together as a school and as a community. We made new friends and formed new bonds. We had new experiences that helped us to grow. We tried new hobbies or new recipes. We watched new movies and TV shows and read new books. We finally got around to those at home DIY projects we've been meaning to get to. We've spent time with family and friends in person, and then we found new ways to stay in each others life. We made memories that we will always look back on. This year may have ended differently and like we never imagined, but here we are. I am incredibly proud to be a part of this family, because that is what we all are; no matter how big or small. We are a family, and I can't wait to see you all again.
So please enjoy this last week of school the best you can. It is still an exciting time and this will end before you know it. I miss you all and hope you are all doing well. Let's enjoy this last week of the 2019 - 2020 school year! #StrongerTogether
Please note that rising K and 7th grade students need additional immunizations to attend Kindergarten and 7th Grade. For more detailed information you can visit the Georgia Department of Public Health's School Vaccines & Updates list by clicking here.

Symbol of Me Essay from Gann Detchprohm (7th grade) | Thanking What Was Once for Granted
Gann wrote this nice piece for his Symbol of Me story.
He used his computer/ cyber school as his symbol.
When I first imagined being stuck at home because of Covid 19, I thought it would be pretty fun, staying inside, doing nothing. It’s fun to watch numbers grow and grow, like when you play Plague Inc. It’s hard to remember that those are real people getting sick and dying. It’s hard to remember it’s not just a game. Humans are social creatures, and it’s hard not seeing each other or being able to converse about anything. It also turns out we like ordering from restaurants more than we realize. All of these activities we can’t do anymore. All we have now to socialize are arrays of buttons, colorful displays, and networks of tiny metal worms.
Normally we take these devices for granted. We sometimes even try to use them less. But it is now, in these dire times, that we really are thankful for these. Without them, we couldn’t interact with each other. Some people don’t have enough internet. Some people don’t have enough scraps of metal, bits of paper, or sheets of plastic to get them. They are gateways to the world. In a time when we can’t connect personally, now we can connect virtually. We still can learn and work. We still can play and have fun. It’s just a little different: virtually...
I woke up on a regular Tuesday morning. Except it wasn’t regular. Today, for the first time in possibly all of Fulton Science Academy’s history, we were going to have classes online. Of course, we had had cyber school before, but we never had classes during those times. We only had some small work. And cyber school normally only lasted one or two days.
Now, we would have cyber school for potentially months, or even to the end of the year. This felt unusual. It didn’t really feel like school anymore but more like some strange chat. We relaxed and laid back, everyone learning how to use the new software. Rushing to my computer setup, a keyboard and two screens, I quickly turned the computer on to go to science. However, I would have to go to fsaconnect to get the link. Rushing, excited but nervous, I clicked on the link and entered the class. It surprised me. I felt amazed at how many settings Zoom had. Testing, poking around, and tinkering with the settings, the softwares delighted me with all the wonderful features they had. I could talk to my friends, or listen to music. It felt just like normal school, and I still had a class schedule. My life still felt sort of organized. I could hear the voices of the teachers and my classmates.
Some people can’t do that, since they don’t have computers. They are probably lonely, not being able to talk to anyone. That is why I am grateful for my computer. It allows me to connect with people in a time when coming close to people isn’t allowed. It allows people to do the impossible: communicate with someone far away. If I was in another time, such as the 1918 flu pandemic, no one would be able to do the same activities we do today, and we would all be lonely and bored.
Despite all the fun activities we can’t do anymore, there are still plenty of activities we can still do, so we shouldn’t feel bad about losing the ability to do something while we still are able to practice activities that others can’t.

A Message From Ms. Agha; Virtual Summer Opportunities for HS Students
Virtual Summer Opportunities for HS
-includes pre-college immersion, seminars, college classes for credit, camps, workshops, and more
**Disclaimer- this is limited to the research I've done. I'm sure there's MANY more opportunities out there, but this is a way to start off your research process and see what's out there. The possibilities are endless. Many colleges have cancelled programs all together, but so many more have adapted and switched to online for your benefit and to keep you safe!
Summer STEM Institute (Virtual)
With many summer programs and research opportunities cancelled due to COVID-19, many students I know have been left without summer plans. To continue educational opportunities during this time, I’m working with a team of science fair alumni to start a virtual high school research program to teach students how to conduct remote research projects with only a laptop and WiFi connection.
The Summer STEM Institute (SSI) is a six-week virtual summer program for high school students. Taught by Harvard and Stanford graduates and teaching assistants, SSI consists of three main parts:
- A research and data science bootcamp: Students will learn how to design and conduct data science research projects. Students will also learn valuable computer science and presentation skills.
- A Masterclass lecture series: Students will be connected with 30+ highly accomplished speakers from Harvard, Stanford, MIT, and other top institutions—from Forbes 30 under 30 awardees, Intel Science Talent Search (STS) winners, to International Math Olympiad Medalists.
- An independent research project: Students will also have the opportunity to conduct a research project in a scientific field of interest. Students will be matched to a virtual lab and mentors, including International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF) winners and Research Science Institute (RSI) scholars.
We have reserved 20 full-tuition scholarships for students who cannot afford to pay full tuition, in addition to our broad financial aid policy. More information can be found on our website here: https://www.summersteminstitute.org/.
NFCC Emerging Leaders Program; apply today! Deadline, May 22

Harvard College Vision | Global Health & Leadership Conference
The mission of the Global Health and Leadership Conference is to empower high school students to serve as the next generation of civically-minded leaders and to foster interest in global health.
This year’s conference theme, Globalization: Health in an Increasingly Connected World, covers topics spanning the COVID-19 Pandemic, Refugee & Migrant Health, Biotechnology, Student Action and Advocacy, and Leadership in Federal Government.
We aim to make this Conference accessible to high school students of all backgrounds and nationalities. As such, the Conference will be free and held in a virtual format via Zoom, a remote conferencing platform. The application form is short and mainly serves to gauge interest and curiosity in global health and leadership development.
Please reference the Frequently Asked Questions page on our website for more information concerning logistics. Please apply by May 16, 2020.
We hope that you will join us on the weekend of May 23-24, to learn from and engage in meaningful discussions with leading experts across government, academia, and health sectors.
