January 6 Modified SRT Schedule
Weather Disruptions to School Activities
As the Winter season begins, the likelihood of weather disruptions occurring to school
activities increases. It is acknowledged that decisions to open, close, or delay school activities can be complicated due to the changing and unpredictable weather occurrences as well as other facility factors that come into play. Because of these factors we take a cautious and individualized approach to the consideration of school activities on days when school is delayed or closed. In the event the weather causes a disruption to the regular schedule, decisions will be made and communicated through activity coaches and/or sponsors. The safety of our staff and students is the top priority. Parents have the right to decide if the roads are safe for travel. Parent judgment is respected and essential. Students will not be penalized for activity attendance on days when the weather disrupts the normal schedule. On days when school is dismissed early due to weather all activities are usually cancelled for the evening.

Graduation Requirements
Graduation requirements and graduation testing have been changing over the past several years and continue to change. Students in the 2020-2022 cohorts may satisfy graduation requirements in one of four ways:
- Passing the GQE/ISTEP+10
- Meeting the requirements of the GQE/ISTEP+10 waiver
- Successfully complete the new graduation pathways (must satisfy all three boxes).
The graduation pathways allow students to create an individual graduation plan. Please note students must attempt the GQE/ISTEP+10 test even if opting into the new graduation pathways
The Class of 2023 is required to graduate under the new graduation pathways.

Run/Hide/Fight
The La Porte Community School corporation has adopted a crisis response tactic for students and staff known as Run, Hide, and Fight. This particular response slogan and tactic has been widely accepted across the nation as a simplistic way to educate staff and students how to respond to an active threat if it were to occur at school.
This year, staff and administration began what will be ongoing training on Run, Hide, Fight. Run, Hide, Fight training is intended to help students and staff act quickly and rationally in the event that they are faced with a threat. We are beginning to engage students in discussion surrounding the Run, Hide, Fight posters that are being displayed in every classroom.
Discussions and training that we have with high school students will be much more detailed than with elementary students. The use of the word fight calls for some explanation. We want to be very clear that we are not advocating that students fight or teaching them how to fight.
Fight in this sense essentially means to do as a last resort, faced with an offender, defend yourself. Fighting, in cases of elementary and middle school students may simply mean distracting, screaming, and throwing items at hand. We know from incidents across the country that anything our students and staff can do to buy time for the authorities to act is important.
Click on the link below to review a Run, Hide, Fight presentation/explanation. This will be beneficial in the event that you discuss the tactic with your children. It is also important to remind children that our schools are in fact safe and the likely hood of us ever needing to use these tactics are slim. Failure on our behalf to prepare, however would be negligence.

Social Emotional Learning (SEL)
SEL is defined as social emotional learning and is a state-wide initiative under the Indiana Department of Education (INDOE). SEL focuses on developing and supporting the skills students need to help them learn and thrive in the areas of social emotional health. The INDOE has identified the following areas for SEL competencies:
- Sensory Integration: Strengthening the mind and body connection – learning strategies that
- help students to become focused successful learners.
- Insight: Developing self-awareness and a positive sense of self.
- Regulation: Developing impulse control and coping strategies to achieve positive self-
- management of ones’ emotions.
- Collaboration: Developing effective conflict resolution and decision-making skills.
- Connection: Developing skills such as empathy and the ability to understand one person’s
- perspective.
- Critical Thinking: Developing the ability to analyze and use sound judgement in effective
- problem-solving.
- Mindset: Developing persistence and resilience and the understanding that learning is process and not defined by one’s current circumstance.
LaPorte Community School Corporation (LPCSC) is dedicated to helping your child become as successful as possible. The above skills are foundational to live and prosper beyond the school career. In addition, the above skill sets are sought after by employers and applicable throughout adulthood.
LPCSC is fostering the SEL initiative through the generous funding from the Healthcare Foundation of LaPorte and by utilizing the proactive evidence-based curriculum Botvin LifeSkills Training (grades 9-10). The effectiveness and delivery of curriculum will be monitored and measured through student, teacher and parent surveys. Collecting feedback is essential to discern the impact of the curriculum. More information will be forthcoming on the SEL initiative through various media and informational venues. LPCSC looks forward to working beyond our school doors with families and the wider community to nurture the success of our children and youth.
SRT College Credit for Seniors
Ivy Tech representatives will be visiting with the Class of 2020 (seniors) on January 15 during SRT to give out information about IvyTech 111, Student Success course.
