Big picture

Senate Bill 1828 and Holocaust Remembrance Week

"SB 1828 instructs the Texas Holocaust and Genocide Commission (THGC) to develop or approve materials for a statewide Holocaust Remembrance Week, starting in the 2019-2020 school year. At the THGC’s suggestion, the Governor’s Office has chosen the week of January 27, 2020, as the date for Remembrance Week. (International Holocaust Remembrance Day is January 27, which is the date that Auschwitz was “liberated” by Allied troops.) Acknowledging that Texas students are best served when educators have choices in the shaping of instruction, the THGC leaves it up to individual school districts to observe Holocaust Remembrance Week by selecting from any of the items listed/linked on the THGC webpage for Holocaust Remembrance Week."

Revised Social Studies STAAR Blueprints and Assessed Curriculum

In response to the streamlined social studies TEKS that are being implemented in middle school and high school classrooms this 2019-2020 school year, a social studies educator advisory committee reviewed the assessed curriculum and blueprint documents for social studies STAAR tests. Based on the committee’s guidance, the assessed curriculum and blueprint documents have been revised and posted to the STAAR Social Studies Resources webpage.

The revised social studies TEKS are posted on the TEA website! Click on the link below to access the new TEKS!

"At the November 2018 State Board of Education (SBOE) meeting, the SBOE approved for second reading and final adoption revisions to the social studies Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS). The revisions streamline the social studies TEKS for kindergarten-grade 8 and the following high school courses: United States History Studies Since 1877, World History Studies, World Geography Studies, United States Government, and Economics with Emphasis on the Free Enterprise System and Its Benefits.

The TEKS for middle school and high school social studies are scheduled for implementation beginning with the 2019-2020 school year and the TEKS for kindergarten-grade 5 are scheduled for implementation in the 2020-2021 school year." - Texas Education Agency
