Hallinan Elementary

Hawk Squawk 4/8/21

Principal's Message

Dear Hallinan Families,

It brings me great joy to report that I am going to be spending more time in classrooms this month. I will be taking over one AM and one PM class per teacher for about 30 minutes, so that our teachers can pop-in to other classrooms. This will provide teachers the opportunity to observe diverse strategies that will inspire new ideas to implement in their classroom to further support student learning. I am happy I'll be with your children, teaching math, ELA and even STEM. You'll hear more about my teaching and learning adventures in upcoming newsletters.

Speaking of STEM, Kindergarteners studied "Happy Homes" and 3rd graders explored invisible forces. Their creativity is shown below.

A quick reminder, Picture Day is on Monday, 4/12.

I hope you all have a safe and fun long weekend!

Health Lessons

Asynchronous health is completed for grades 1-5, for this school year. Kindergarten will finish the week of April 12. Per SB 856, Erin's Law, four additional lessons will be taught by classroom teachers in April. Please see the information below regarding Erin's Law.

Students have two health magazines that will not be covered during asynchronous lessons. Families may review these materials with their children.

Erin's Law

What Is Erin’s Law?

In 2015, the Oregon legislature passed SB 856, also known as Erin’s Law. Erin’s Law requires the development and adoption of child sexual abuse prevention programs for students in kindergarten through 12th grade in all Oregon public schools.

SB 856 mandates that all Oregon Public Schools provide:

  • A minimum of 4 instructional sessions (equal to or greater than a standard class period) of sex abuse prevention instruction per year for grades kindergarten through 12
  • Sexual abuse instruction that is integrated and part of required district comprehensive sexuality education plan and is aligned with state standards
  • Instruction that is age appropriate, medically accurate, and is not shame or fear based
  • Instruction that is culturally inclusive and is responsive to diverse students including race, ethnicity, gender identity and sexual orientation
  • A parental involvement component to inform parents about child sexual abuse topics
  • A professional training component for administrators, teachers and other school personnel
