Shorewood Hills Shark Tooth
October 21st, 2022
It's hard to believe we are almost at the end of October already!
On Monday, October 31st, students will be released at 11:45 am so teachers can prepare for parent-teacher conferences. The conference sign-ups were sent to your email. Please reach out if you need assistance with signing up for a time.
Halloween also falls on Monday the 31st. MMSD does not allow costumes to be worn during the school day and we do not do a candy exchange. However, we do have our PTO-sponsored Fall Festival on Saturday, October 29th where costumes are welcome!
I hope everyone has a wonderful and WARM! weekend.
In partnership,
Anne Gillespie
Principal
From the PTO: Costume Swap and Winter Clothing Drive
SHES PTO is sponsoring its annual costume and winter clothing drives!
Please drop your gently used costumes and winter gear in the labeled bins located at the front doors of the school (door 1) during school hours. Costumes will be collected until Friday, October 28th, and winter gear until the following week. Visit the costume swap immediately after school on October 28th! Grab a new costume for the holiday or replenish your dress-up bin!
The winter gear swap will be during the first week of November, details TBD.
Fall Festival Information!
We are seeking volunteers to help with the Fall Festival. Please sign up here:
The PTO’s Fall Festival is a fun and exciting celebration for all our families. We want children to be safe, responsible, respectful, and an ally so we can all enjoy the festival. For everyone’s enjoyment, we ask that families take time to review student behavior expectations in the school’s Code of Conduct, which can be found on the school website (shorewood.madison.k12.wi.us). Thank you for helping all of us have a fun, safe, and successful festival! The same behavior expectations for students at school apply to the event. In addition, we ask that:
• A parent or guardian escort and attend the festival with their children, and that the parent or guardian remain to supervise their child throughout the duration of the event. • Students stay in the designated areas during the celebration.
To maintain a safe event, any children arriving without supervision or who leaves the designated celebration areas will be asked to leave the premises. Thank you for helping all of us have a fun, safe, and successful festival!
Frequently Asked Questions
Q. Who can attend the festival? How much does it cost?
A. All school students and their families are invited. This is a FREE event for all school families, sponsored by PTO (Parent Teacher Organization).
Q: Can I drop off my kids?
A: No - All kids must be accompanied by an adult chaperone for the entire duration of the event.
Q. Where are the scavenger hunt locations?
A. Please check in at the main entrance of the school to collect your scavenger hunt card. The scavenger hunt locations will be spread across the school playgrounds.
Q: Are costumes required?
A: No! Costumes are a fun part of the event but are definitely not required.
Q: Where can I get a costume?
A: Our festival correlates with the American Halloween holiday so there are many places to find costumes. All major retailers, dollar stores, craft stores and thrift stores (ie. St. Vincent’s and Goodwill) have large areas dedicated to costumes that fit into most budgets. In addition, many people find their costumes by re-purposing items from their own home, using makeup or by creating/crafting items. Remember - No violent, excessively scary, or offensive costumes allowed and no weapons.
Q: Is this festival scary?
A: The decor and theme are not scary, and the PTO aims to keep this event family-friendly and accessible to everyone. That said, this event is very popular, and it brings in a large crowd. One side of the playground has loud music and dancing which some children can find overwhelming. We do offer a craft space and photo booth in quieter areas, and we will have some other fun surprises this year as well.
Q: How can I help the PTO with this event?
A: This event is made possible by volunteers, and we need your help to make it a success! All positions are easy and fun. Please sign up at www.facebook.com/shorewoodPTO

Safety Patrol Info
Greetings,
Safety patrol is an important part of our school and community. 5th graders at Shorewood have the honor to show their leadership by keeping our students safe before and after school.
Their duties are to keep students safe when crossing roads. They will be wearing neon green belts and will have flags for crossing. This will help cars see that kids are crossing. The patrollers will allow cars to pass before crossing students. At times, cars will stop and allow kids to cross. This will only occur if the patrollers have made eye contact and believe it is safe to cross. Patrollers will have their arms out in case they need to hold back or grab a student that may cross in front of a car. They will also report any unsafe behaviors to me and I will relay it to the homeroom teachers and Principal Gillespie.
Please help them by teaching your child these safe behaviors and allowing them to do their job. They are still children and will continue to grow as leaders of the community. Please show patience!
*Respect and listen to your patrollers and wait until they allow you to cross.
*Stop at the crosswalks. Look right, left, right for cars.
*Walk your bikes across the street. Do not ride into the street.
*Thank your patrollers for keeping you safe!
Many thanks,
Mr. Wong
