Notes from the Principal
Dear West Family,
Happy New Year!
It has been great seeing the students back in the building this week. I hope you all had a wonderful break and holiday season.
We have a lot going on this month with STAR testing as well as other assessments. We are also kicking off a PBIS program that educates students and staff about building expectations and reinforcing those with positive support. Please make sure to ask your students about the “PAWS” stickers their class is collecting.
You will find a few general reminders below:
Popcorn and School Store 1/13/23
Big Idea Assembly 1/13/23
No School 1/16/23 (Staff Professional Development)
Mobile Dentist 2/7/23 (Info coming home today and located below in our newsletter)
BASE Classes still available (These begin the week of the 23th- if still interested)
Finally, as the weather continues to change please help your students bring appropriate attire to school. Snow Pants, boots, gloves, hat and jacket are required to play out in the snow (when we have it;). When we don’t have snow the playground can become quite muddy as you have probably witnessed this week. Also, an extra change of clothes in your childrens’ backpacks are helpful as the office does not have any extras.
As always please feel free to reach out with any questions, comments, or concerns.
West is..
Best,
Tony
Attendance
Student Absences
Just a reminder if your student is absent please email westoffice@nvps.net or call 616.361.3470 the day of the absence.
Student Tardy
Students are marked tardy if they arrive to class after the 8:15 bell. Please make sure to sign them in on the Chromebook located in our lobby if you drop off students after this time.
*If your student is attending an appointment of any kind please provide us with a doctor's note.
We are now at the point where truancy/attendance letters have begun being sent out and want to make sure we are working together to have your student in school as often as possible. Please know that this reporting it mandatory by the state of Michigan and is something we have to do.
The Dentist is Coming to West!!
The Mobile Dentist will be at West Oakview Tuesday, February 7. Permission slips went home with ALL students today. These are due back next week Friday, January 13.
*See below for a link to sign up online.

Nurse's Corner
- Please remember that you cannot send medicine to school with a student, regardless of it is OTC or prescription. A Northview permission form for medication at school must be filled out before office staff can give it to the student.
- A fever is a temperature greater than 100.4F (according to the CDC). Do not send your child to school for 24 hours after the fever has broken and without the use of fever-reducing medication. A low grade fever is 99.0 - 100.3F. If your child is not feeling well enough to attend school, please keep them home.
- Although lice is not a communicable disease, it can be a nuance. As a parent, it is your responsibility to check and remove lice and nits from your child's hair. Please click here for the KCHD fact sheet.
- For the younger children, it is a great idea to keep an extra pair of underwear and pants in a ziploc bag in the bottom of their backpack (accidents happen).
- Continue to practice good hand and cough hygiene with your children.
