Principal's Message

Dear SMG Families & Friends,

Happy Sunday!

We have a busy week coming up this week beginning with our Read Across America Day Celebration and assembly first thing Monday morning. We will welcome the Mayor of Arlington, Mayor Williams to SMGville as we celebrate literacy and Dr. Suess's birthday. A full recap will be in the next Trojan Times after spring break on March 17th.

Please note, the next Home and School General Meeting is Monday, May 6th--not tomorrow night as listed in the church bulletin.

Also this week, on Tuesday we will celebrate Mardi Gras with a parade, treats including King Cake, and a prayer service before Ash Wednesday the next day. Wednesday's school Mass will be at 10AM that morning, rather than our usual 8AM time.

Finally, Friday, March 8th is a half-day with dismissal at 12PM. There will be SMEED but there will NOT be any lunch service, so be sure to send a lunch with your student(s) if they are staying for SMEED that afternoon. Spring Break is next week, March 11-15, 2019.

Have a wonderful evening and week ahead!

St. Maria Goretti, Pray for Us!

Blessings,

Laura Behee, M.Ed.

MARCH VIRTUE: MERCY

Mercy is the virtue of the month for March. Mercy is caring for those who suffer. Jesus has told us that we must show mercy in two ways: physically (for the body) and spiritually (for the soul). When we feed someone who is hungry, we show mercy; when we forgive someone who has hurt us, we show mercy. Jesus showed us this mercy when He forgave sins (spiritual) and cured the sick (physical). As Jesus did, so we must do. Blessed are the MERCIFUL!

There are many saints who exemplified the virtue of honesty. Three who we are going to be learning about this month are:

  • St. John Vianney: Feast Day – August 4 – Saint John Vianney wanted his life as a priest to be filled with mercy for those who turn away from God. Saint John Vianney went to the homes of the people in his parish when they were sick, spent many hours praying to Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament, and heard Confessions all day and night – people came from everywhere just so he could hear their Confessions!

  • Saint Faustina: Feast Day – October 5 –Saint Faustina grew up in a big family in Poland and joined the Sisters of Our Lady of Mercy when she was a young woman. She was always mindful of how others suffered and wanted to help them. She offered many sacrifices, sufferings, and prayers for souls who needed God’s mercy. Many times she did not know the souls for whom she was suffering. On February 22, 1931, Our Lord appeared to Saint Faustina in a vision and instructed her to paint Him as he appeared to her and include the motto, “Jesus; I trust in you.” He wanted her to proclaim the message of His mercy-Divine Mercy-to the whole world, which she faithfully did until her death.

  • St. Teresa of Calcutta: Feast Day – September 5 – “At the end of our lives, we will not be judged by…how many great things we have done. We will be judged by “I was hungry and you gave me something to eat. I was naked and you clothed me. I was homeless and you took me in.” Agnes Gonxha Bojaxhiu was born in the country of Albania and left home at age 18 to join the Sisters of Loreto as a missionary. By 1929, she was assigned to a girl’s school in Calcutta, India, where she spent many happy years teaching.
