Writing Workshop

Students have been working hard on their realisitic fiction stories. We have discovered that it can be difficult to keep ourselves out of the story and write about others from an outside perspective. Mrs. G is reading many rough drafts aloud so students can hear what their stories sound like and make adjustments accordingly.

Reading Workshop

We learned about plot and made text connections this week in our Beverly Cleary book clubs. We talked about the main problems our character has been going through in the beginning of the book, added more character traits that were presented while reading and answered comprehension questions. We also made connection to other texts, ourselves and the world and recorded them on sticky notes and our book club packets. We plan to end this unit before Spring Break!

Word Work

We worked more on regular and irregular plural nouns and were introduced to abstract nouns. Students chose the activities that were available to them to practice with concrete and abstract nouns. They could draw about it, write about it, do a hidden word puzzle or coloring activity. Students will take a snapshot next week to demonstrate their learning through Edmodo.

We started Unit 7 this week. We are really practicing our multiplication and division facts and hope that students will start memorizing and knowing their facts fast! We took two multiplication timed tests. The goal is just to keep getting faster and more accurate every time we try. If you would like to help your child become fluent with their facts flashcards are always helpful, multiplication and division skill builders are useful and singing our songs can assist as well! We will continue with our unit next week and test when we come back for Spring Break.

We enjoyed our science station on land changes. Students discovered the difference between a slow and fast land changes, studied and analyzed soil samples and took notes on erosion and weathering in their interactive science notebooks. We also gathered data, made hypothesis did weathering experiments with chalk. We learned a lot! The rock cycle and the different types of rocks will be explored next week.
