Reading Without Walls - Library Challenge
I wanted to update you on one of our new library happenings, book talks! I’ve introduced grades 3-5 to a challenge called Reading without Walls. It is a national reading challenge where readers are asked to do three things:
- Read a book on a topic you do not know much about.
- Read a book with character that does not look or live like you.
- Read a book in a format or genre that you do not normally read.
To help promote this challenge and share great books, I've trained the students on how to film quick, quality book talks. There is a link to a FlipGrid set up on the Line Creek website. It is on the media center page, right above my picture. All 3rd-5th graders are encouraged to film a quick, quality book talk after they finished a book they liked. They log in through google and use their PH credentials. They can film this during library checkout time, at home, or in the classroom at appropriate times.
Click HERE to access our book talks.
Thanks for promoting a love of reading!

Habit of the Month - Put First Things First
This month your child(ren) will be learning about Habit 3: Put First Things First.
Please read about this habit and share this habit at home.
Begin with the End in Mind at Home: Work First, Then Play
- Do the things that I have to do before I do the things that I want to do.
- Stay focused on what I'm doing and try to minimize distractions and regroup if I get off task.
- Spend my time on the things that are the most important.
Activity Ideas
1) Define "big rocks" and "little rocks" as a family. Big rocks are the things we prioritize as most important. You can think, "What would happen if I didn't do this at all next week...?" Some times little rocks keep us too busy to do big rocks - the things most important to us (watching TV, checking social media, etc.). Put big rocks first!
2) Schedule one on one time.
3) Make time for family meals.
4) Create regular weekly family times.
5) Build family traditions.
Redistricting Update
The Redistricting Feedback Forums on Park Hill Listens will close at 10 a.m. on Monday, Dec. 3.
The next Redistricting Committee Meeting is at 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 5 at Plaza Middle School.
At the November 29th meeting, Dr. Kelly explained how the additional, revised scenarios, A4 and B5, were created by the demographers based on earlier scenarios the committee created. The demographers were also under the same requirements as the committee, working to address issues we heard in the feedback while meeting all the Board’s criteria.
This was a response to requests from some committee members and the public to allow time for our outside demographers to produce more, improved scenarios using their digital GIS tools. The scenarios the demographers produced provided improvements in some areas of the Board’s criteria, but they presented challenges in others.
Committee members asked several questions and provided comments about the process and the scenarios.
Considerations:
Dr. Kelly said staff members would still, after the committee recommends a scenario and the Board votes on it, be able to make very small improvements to the boundaries. For example, we might need to adjust a line to make bus routes more efficient, to reconnect small subdivisions, or to respond to some of the issues people told us about in Park Hill Listens or at the open houses.
He said district staff will make a recommendation to the Board about grandfathering and other details, so the Board can vote on these issues at its Dec. 13 meeting.

Park Hill Stars
The Park Hill Star recognition program was started in 2015 to celebrate support staff and teachers whose work is especially noteworthy.
The following is an overview of the Park Hill Star Program:
Our employees are the reason we are so successful here in the Park Hill School District, and we would like to recognize them for all they do for our students.
That is why we present the Park Hill Star award once a month to a pre-K or elementary teacher, a secondary teacher and a support employee.
Nominations are not being accepted at this time, but opportunities will re-open at the beginning of the 2018-19 school year. Thanks to everyone who took the time to nominate a Park Hill Star this year!
Park Hill Hall of Fame
Each January, the Park Hill School District inducts one or more alumni into the Alumni Hall of Fame. This award honors those district graduates whose lives and careers are models of achievement and community service.
The nominee must be a graduate of Park Hill High School or Park Hill South High School who graduated five or more years ago. Posthumous nominations will be accepted. For the January 2019 induction, the committee will consider nominations received by Dec. 1.
