December News Letter
Ms. Wiles and Ms. Oliva dana.wiles@fcps.org
Classroom at a glance.
Social Studies: We will be learning about New World explorers, their impact on history, and technological tools they used for their journey.
Math: In math we will be applying operational thinking while working with powers of ten, and rational and whole numbers. Be on the lookout for the use of our new resource The Tenth Street Pet Sanctuary to help us understand and use decimals.
Writing: We will be looking through the lens of a historian to create a research report on early exploration. As a class we will create our version of a National Geographic Magazine based on our research.
Reading: This month your student will receive a new novel for book club. Our goal is to use these to deepen our understanding of text dependent questions and complex literary analysis. We will also be working on reading and comprehending informational text using higher level questioning.

Middle School Updates
All 5th grade magnet parents will receive a letter from Tom Saunders, director of middle schools, and Margret Lee in January. The articulation process will begin in late January and families will hear from middle schools about information evenings for parents, most of which are held in late winter.
There is a team working to welcome the magnet students to middle school, led by the advanced academics specialist at each middle school. There is nothing that parents have to do to nominate students for the middle school HAL program.
Please email or call me with any and all questions that you may have.
