December News Letter

Ms. Wiles and Ms. Oliva

Classroom at a glance.

This month we will be working on exciting new topics in the classroom.

Social Studies: We will be learning about New World explorers, their impact on history, and technological tools they used for their journey.

Math: In math we will be applying operational thinking while working with powers of ten, and rational and whole numbers. Be on the lookout for the use of our new resource The Tenth Street Pet Sanctuary to help us understand and use decimals.

Writing: We will be looking through the lens of a historian to create a research report on early exploration. As a class we will create our version of a National Geographic Magazine based on our research.

Reading: This month your student will receive a new novel for book club. Our goal is to use these to deepen our understanding of text dependent questions and complex literary analysis. We will also be working on reading and comprehending informational text using higher level questioning.

Technology Update!

Our classroom is now fully equipped with student tablets! We will use these during instruction for all subject areas when appropriate. All students are enrolled in Google Classroom. There will be an informational flyer provided in Thursday folders that we created as a class to help parents understand how we will be using this tool! Google classroom is designed to help teachers collect and create assignments paperlessly including time saving features like automatically making a copy of a Google Document for each student. It also creates Drive folders for each assignment to help keep students organized!

You're Invited!

Be on the lookout for an invitation to visit our classroom. This month we will be inviting parents in for a gallery walk through our living museum. We will be designing our own version of a National Geographic Explorer Magazine, an exhibit based upon exploration with a visual model and an explorer biography. This museum experience will be interactive and we hope that you can attend. As always you are more than welcome to visit our classroom at any time.

As we are enter cold and flu season, donations of tissues, hand-sanitizer, and sanitizing wipes are greatly appreciated.

Hood Intern

Ms. Oliva, our Intern from Hood College will be leaving us Friday, December 12th. She will be back with us all day, every day starting mid January.

Middle School Updates

All 5th grade magnet parents will receive a letter from Tom Saunders, director of middle schools, and Margret Lee in January. The articulation process will begin in late January and families will hear from middle schools about information evenings for parents, most of which are held in late winter.

There is a team working to welcome the magnet students to middle school, led by the advanced academics specialist at each middle school. There is nothing that parents have to do to nominate students for the middle school HAL program.

Please email or call me with any and all questions that you may have.
