Outstanding Opportunities for Outstanding Teachers

Exemplary teachers from across the U.S. who integrate technology to support problem-based and/or inquiry learning classrooms are encouraged to apply for the Jacobs Award. Recipients will connect with researchers at the IU School of Education to create short reports that will provide useable research for teachers to help them understand best practices. Although this is a national award, many of the past winners have been from Indiana, and last year's were all middle school teachers! I have friends who have raved about their experience after winning. Applications are due September 14.

What If You Were Told to Spend the Summer Exploring a Passion? And Someone Will Give You $12,000 to Do It? It IS All about You!

Big picture
The September 4 deadline is approaching for the Lilly Teacher Creativity Grant. This fellowship enables educators to pursue dreams & passions, explore new areas of interest, or expand & develop new & existing talents. The application is completely online; that and more information can be found here. Some tips are here, plus I have heard:

•First paragraphs are key; be sure to exude passion immediately!

•Look at past winners to help with ideas.

•Foreign travel is often awarded, as well as projects incorporating the arts.

•Have someone else read your grant proposal to see if it makes sense to them.

•Request your letters of recommendation ASAP to be sure to give the writers plenty of time to complete them.

•If you've applied and been rejected before; don't give up. Some people have finally won on their second...or third... or fourth time!

And Something Available to All Students!

All 5th-8th Indiana students are eligible for the Indiana Humanities Shelfie Challenge. By reading at least 5 of the 10 books on this list and sharing brief notes by December 31, 2018,, students will receive a $10 Amazon gift card. Why not have your librarian, science teachers, and ELA teachers collaborate to make these titles accessible to students and encourage participation? Indiana Humanities has several other programs and grants that include schools.

Now Available: Eva Kor Film & Toolkit, Complete with Lesson Plans

Today I attended a conference session utilizing a new toolkit relating to the film "Eva," about Holocaust survivor Eva Kor's life experiences and mission to reduce discrimination, bullying, and persecution, all while promoting forgiveness. The toolkit includes a school version of the film, which we were told is suitable for 4th grade and up. These lessons could be incorporated many different ways, including ELA, social studies, advisory, or other social-emotional programs. You can find out more and order it on this site. I found the materials to be very thorough, and will be giving a set as a doorprize at our IMLEA conference.
