New Teacher Support & Development
Empowering and Motivating Every Student, Every Day!
Peer Observations
One of the best learning experiences for new teachers comes via observing colleagues in their classrooms. Today, John and I had the privilege of providing this experience to Celeste Aguilera and Angelica Paredes, both first-year teachers at San Vicente. The observed in classrooms of Mrs. Pérez, Ms. López, and Ms. Buttle at Frank Ledesma and Mrs. Cante's at San Vi. We appreciate these teachers' modeling, for Ms. Aguilera and Mrs. Paredes gleaned much that relates to their particular goal. We also thank Mr. Calderón for approving this day for his teachers and Mr. Radtke for welcoming us to Frank Ledesma.
Our time encompassed more than observations. First, each teacher shared her instructional goal; this defined the observation purpose for each of them. Next, we viewed a Teaching Channel video--"Observing for Learning"--that instructs to focus first on student learning, then to ruminate on how the teacher engendered the learning. Also, Angelica and Celeste engaged in communicating, critical thinking, writing, pair-sharing, independent reflecting, and planning for enhancing their own students' learning based on what they had gleaned. Finally, returning to their site, with Mr. Calderón, they shared their learning.
