Betsy's Bits
July Summer Edition
In Case You Missed It:
Since being back at work Evan and I have been scheduling in between interviews. We are checking demographic makeups of classes and then sixth and eighth grades will be given to Joy to put into PowerSchool. Next, we will work on EC schedules.
New additions to our Stallion Family:
- Misty Thompson, 6th grade ELA, is coming to us from Harnett County where she taught EC in middle and high school. Fun fact: Anriette Pienaar was her mentor in Harnett Co.
- Gail Vaughan, 7th grade math, is coming to us from Moore County where she taught 6-8th grade math over the last few years.
- Tina Cameron, bookkeeper, is coming to us in October from Harnett Co, where she has served in this same position for 10 years at Western Harnett Middle School. Fun Fact: Tina is Megan Graham's older sister :)
Announced last Bits (reminder):
- Heather Hughes, girl's Health/PE teacher, is coming to us from Wake County and lives in Lee County. She is a mother of three with her oldest joining us in 6th grade. Fun Fact: Heather worked with Courtney Jordan, previous H/PE teacher @SLMS, in Wake Co.
- Kimberly Morril, Career Exploration, is coming to us from Ingram Elementary where she has been an elective teacher/TA (AVID, Leader in Me, and test prep) and sub bus driver. Fun fact: I taught her oldest in kindergarten, and she volunteered a lot that year in my classroom. Her son just graduated from high school and will beginning at NC State in August.
- Alex Rivera, front office support (part-time), has worked in the front office a busy middle school in Chatham Co. She is bilingual. Fun Fact: Jamie worked with Alex at Chatham Middle School.
Leaving home:
- Mark Hildreth, 8th ELA, has accepted a position in Moore County teaching 7th and 8th grade at the school where his oldest daughter will be attending.
- Angela Kincaid, 8th grade math, has accepted a position at a charter school in Chatham Co, where both her children will be attending.
- Nick Baker, H/PE boys, is moving to Virginia.
- Betsy Burke was announced as a new addition last month on 6th grade. She chose to accept a position in Wake County at a magnet school, closer to family.
Moves within the building:
- Staci Thomas is moving up to 8th grade ELA on the Wolfpack Team. This is what she was teaching before she moved to SLMS last year.
- Josh Schneider will be teaching Social Studies on the Pirate Team. He wanted to go back to his first love for at least a year.
Positions still open:
- 8th grade math
- 7th grade math (2)
- 7th ELA
- 6th ELA/So. Studies
- H/PE
- EC (Adaptive Curriculum) - We were granted an additional position on our EC Team for our students in the Separate Setting on the EC continuum.
*I have several interviews over the next few days for these posted positions. If you know someone that would be interested in joining our team, please let me know!
Update from our Custodian Team:
- Sixth and seventh grade hallways are completely finished.
- Eighth grade rooms are complete. The custodians are working on the hallway.
- All carpets have been cleaned and gym floor was waxed.
- They are working their way down the main hallway and will then go to the 300's and foyer areas.

Professional Development Opportunities:
August 8 & 9 ~ AVID Professional Learning Workshops for teachers that do not have 12+ hours in AVID.
August 6-10 ~New Teacher Academy (brand new teachers to LCS)
August 15 & 16 ~ Best Practices in Academic Language Learning
*All of these opportunities are posted with a description on Schoollink. Please sign up before attending, unless you are a new teacher. New teachers to LCS should let me know you plan to attend and I will inform the appropriate person.

August 17 ~ Required Workday
August 20 ~ Required Workday - SanLee Middle School Opening Meeting 8:00am-noon (breakfast served)
August 21 ~ Required Workday - Convocation in morning and Director's Day in afternoon.
August 22 ~ Required Workday - Team (10:30 am) and grade level (8:30 am)meetings
August 23 ~ Required Workday (flex hours)~ Open House 4-7 - everyone is required to attend
August 24 ~ Required Workday - Department meetings (8:30 am) and grade level PLC's (math and ELA 10:30/Sc and SS @1:30) - notify admin if times change, so they are able to attend.
August 27 ~ First Day of school for students - Assembly at beginning of each Exploratory block (core teachers remain until end of assembly)
