The Legacy of Rome

Engineering

Engineering

I chose engineering because, the romans invented amazing things that have influence the world to this day. They've invented things like roads, bridges and aqueducts. Each and every one of these inventions have influenced the world tremendously. The romans invented roads, which have been used every day, all across the world. Roads are one of the best ways to travel even these days. They also invented bridges which are still being built to this day all over the world to help travel over water and, now in modern days, other roads.

arches

An arch is a curved structure that is usually made of brick, stone or concrete. Its purpose is to support a large building. Most arches are made with wedge shaped blocks. The top center stone, called the keystone, is the last block to be inserted. During construction, arches are supported by a wooden frame in the shape of the arch. When all the stones are inserted in position, the frame is removed, and both sides of the arch press against the keystone, holding the arch, and building, in place. When done correctly, the arch is capable of holding tremendous amounts of weight.
