A Note from Mrs. Raper

What a fun last week! We got to participate in the amazing author visit with David Titus, known as the string man! The kiddos were mesmerized by his gift of story telling and using string to make the characters as he told the stories. I'm sure you heard all about it! Then to end the week with Super Kids Day...fun, fun, fun! We worked hard and played hard!!

Our Poetry Slam will be coming up the last week of school. Stay posted for the time and date. I will let you know soon! We will share our favorite poems in the library and then come back to our classroom for refreshments and to finish sharing the rest of our poems with our families.

This week we will take our end of the year math benchmark assessment. This will take us a couple of days. I will be sending home a letter with your child's end of year DRA2 score and the math benchmark score. Thank you for all of your support this year in helping your child be successful in their education.

This Week in Class...

Math:

We will continue working on Unit 8 in math this week. The concepts we will cover this week are:

  • Partitioning Rectangles
  • Array Number Stories
  • 2-digit subtraction without regrouping

At home, please practice counting change, and getting change back with your child. This is an everyday skill that we are working on in class, and working on it at home, and in the "real world" could be very beneficial. Also, working on telling time with an analog clock, and asking questions like "What time will it be in two hours?" helps reinforce skills taught in class. As always, practice with addition and subtraction fact fluency. A good way to do this is through Xtra Math.

Literacy:

This weeks literacy concepts are:

  • Sound of the week: open and closed sylllables
  • Story Genre: myth
  • Comprehension Skill: theme
  • Comprehension Strategy: context clues
  • Grammar: adjectives
  • Mechanics: commas in a series
  • Writing: poetry

We have been working very hard on our poetry. They are loving this and taking great pride in it! We have been learning about repetition, rhythm, onomatopoeia, similes, and the importance of word choice. We used our senses today to help us add detail to our free verse poems. They did great with this! Ask them about their poems they have written.

Please continue to do Smarty Ants at home with your child. The skills your child learns in this program go right with what we learn in class. It really is a great tool, and on top of it, it is fun and engaging.

Social Studies/Science:

We will begin learning about Earth events and changes to the Earth. We will learn about events and changes that happen quickly (hurricanes, tornadoes, etc.) and events and changes that happen slowly (erosion). We will also learn about different landforms on Earth.
