Five Mobile Apps for the Classroom
by: Nicholas Chow
In the flyer, I will be discussing five different mobile apps (apps for Android or iOS devices) that educators may find useful in a classroom.
Duolingo is a free language app on both iOS and Android. The purpose of Duolingo is to teach language to users; at the moment there are 16 different languages you can pick from. I believe that this can be used very well for beginning to teach in a second, third, or fourth language class. It can also be good practice for people who already know a language; for example French students can use the app for French vocabulary. The app is, however, used primarily for teaching new languages, which is great for beginner Spanish classes for example.
Google Classroom is a learning management system (LMS) ran by Google. It can be accessed online, as well as apps for Chrome, iOS and Android. As an LMS, Google Classroom can allow teachers to make announcements, post questions or assignments, and update course information, which students can access on any of the apps or website. Teachers can easily implement this into any classroom.
Khan Academy is a video based learning service. Khan Academy offers access to many educational videos covering a variety of subjects, which can go from basic counting to integral calculus, and everything in-between. Khan Academy has apps for iOS and Android, as well as access from the website, and is useful from Kindergarten to higher education.
Photomath is an app for iOS and Android devices which uses a devices camera to scan and solve a math problem. The app can solve many different variations of mathematics formulas; and shows steps to some, but not all, the equations it solves (it can show steps to things such as linear equations, but not trigonometry for example). There isn't much to say about the app either than it can be useful for students who need extra help with understanding the steps in getting the answer to an equation. I believe this app would be most useful in a High School setting.
TED is a service which offers educational videos on a large variety of topics. These topics can be from social issues, to new technology. You can access the content on Youtube, on their website, or through their iOS or Android apps. This can be useful as TED offers such a large variety of content it can appeal to pretty much any classroom.
