Math Updates
PLEASE try to have your child practice his/her subtraction math facts every night at home for at least 5-10 minutes. You can practice with the Xtra math website, EDM games like Subtraction Top-it, flash cards, or just calling out facts and recording the ones that need to be worked on. The second trimester goal is to get 60 correct in two minutes for a score of a 3.
In Math this week, we continued our study of area and perimeter. The students learned many valuable strategies such as using composite units, and multiplying length X width (and writing a number sentence for it). They also played the area and perimeter game to practice the skills they have learned. Wrapping up the week was an open response challenge that asked the students to draw very specific rabbit pens and making sure important information was labeled appropriately.
Building a READING LIFE
In Reading this week, we began our Poetry unit. This is an exciting time, as they can truly begin to appreciate the poems we read because they have already learned how to write them!
Word Study
Word Study tests will be on Friday, December 14th.
Monday nights- Students are to sort their words and record them in their notebooks. They are to also record their discovery or rule for the week.
Tuesday and Wednesday nights- Students should sort their words and read them as they sort. They can practice writing them on paper, whiteboards, or typing them. NO WRITTEN homework is required on these nights.
Thursday nights- Students are to ask an adult to quiz them on their words. They write the headers and then record the words as they are called out. The adult should use the notebook to correct the sort and ask the student to practice any words that were spelled incorrectly. This can be done on the back of the homework sheet. This paper should then be returned to school Friday morning.
Friday- there will be a test given
