Forensic Science Update
April 25, 2013
What have we been doing in Forensics?
National DNA Databases?
We have been discussing the pros and cons of having a National DNA Database in our discussion boards recently. The class is pretty evenly split on this hot topic! For Forensics, having a national DNA Database would have distinct advantages in identifying victims and suspects. On the other hand, some are concerned that it infringes on privacy rights and the DNA may actually be used in illegal ways. Some voiced concerns involving insurance company decisions about whether to insure a person based upon their genetic predisposition to diseases. Discuss this issue with your parent/student and see what you come up with!
Hair will report drug use when a user won't!
Did you know that hair can be used to test for drug use? Some of the drug toxins and metabolites will become trapped inside the cortex of hair! Alcohol can be detected for up to 2 days after consumption. Methamphetamine, Marijuana, Cocaine and PCP (among others) can be detected for up to 90 days after consumption!
What is "rifling" on a gun, and why is it important?
Rifling is the grooved pattern interior appearance of a rifle or handgun barrel. It is formed during the manufacturing process generally by a rifle broaching bit which cuts all of the grooves in one pass. The rifling actually causes the bullet to spin when it is fired, thus improving accuracy and range. A shotgun does not have rifling!
As we finish up the semester...
