the Archibald prize is probably the most important portrait which is held at the art gallery of new south wales. the painting has to look nearly realistic as it contains really unique painters of Australia. the Archibald prize started of by J.F Archibald which was originally ____________ that came from his name.

history

the first year that they started the Archibald prize was in 1921, the Victorians controlled it in 1921 but for some reason it happened to be hosted at the art gallery of New South Wales. in 1942, someone painted a portrait of Miss Collins with an artist from world war II. in the Archibald prize, there are probably around 700 entries but 50 are chosen for the finals.

controversy

The controversy started of with many people attracted by the Archibald prize so they wanted to win, they secretly bought many of the famous paintings and claimed that it was their paintings. two decades later, William Dobell prize winning painting finally broke the convention as if established in the Archibald.
