Teaching and Learning Corner (with Ms. Snyder)
Last week’s look for was “What to do Directions” with a focus on the “break it down” element. This week, we will continue to look for effective “What to do Directions” with a focus on “Check for Understanding.”
- Break It Down: Be specific, concise, and sequential
- Check For Understanding:
- Option 1: Ask a scholar to repeat the directions
- Option 2: Have scholars turn and tell their neighbor the directions
- Option 3: Have the class give a choral response to direction
Watch this best practice video as you continue to build your teaching toolkit.
Standards-Based Grading
Gradebook Tracker Reminder: Reminder that you can view your gradebook here. If you want to take a look at the continuum, take a look here. If you are in need of refresher regarding the grading overview, click here.
Parent Communication: Friday you need to reach out to any parent whose scholar has less than a 70% in the HOS tracker in any category. I recommend having a standard message you send to each parent through your communication app.
CULTURE AND CLIMATE CORNER (with Mrs. Douglas)
This Week's Global Greatness Look Fors:
SILENT HALLWAY TRANSITIONS:
Hallway transitions are an area of grow. At this point in the year, we should still be "sweating the small stuff." Scholars and staff are expected to be silent when traveling throughout the halls. Scholars should practice silent transitions if they don't get them right the first time. As a best practice, to better manage lines when walking in the halls, teachers should 1) assign line leaders check points so that they know where to stop throughout their travels 2) position themselves in the middle of the line, rather than walk at the front, with our backs to the scholars. Teachers and staff are encouraged to model the desired behaviors by using non-verbals and quiet redirections, when necessary.
UNPACKING RESPONSIBILITY: Because our Jewel of the Month for September is our first Global Greatness expectation, this month we will focus on unpacking responsibility. In your morning meetings, iLead and Restorative Circle time, please come up with discussions and activities that your scholars can do to begin understanding what responsibility means.
Thank you for your patience! We are ready to formally roll out our dismissal procedure. As a way to increase scholar supervision and maintain scholar safety, each grade group will have teachers assigned to either bus, parent pickup or aftercare. Expectations and assignments are outlined below. Feel free to reach out to Mrs. Douglas with any questions or concerns.
Dismissal Procedures
Dismissal process will begin with Ms. Tyler making dismissal announcements
3:15p: Call for Dismissal Support
3:20p: Call for RS bus scholars, then LL, then CA
3:25p: Call for aftercare scholars
3:30p: Call for walkers and parent pickups to schoolyard
· Designee's will be in place to monitor movement in the halls
· No scholar can be kept behind in class once their bus has been called.
· A final prompt will be given to state that all buses have been loaded and will be dismissed.
Teachers should collect their bus scholars/aftercare scholars at classroom doors.
· School bus monitors will check off all scholars present on buses and will ensure that no bus pulls off without all scholars attended for
· After the final prompt for buses has been made the walkers and parent pick up dismissal process will begin
· All teachers will be assigned to either bus scholars (gymnasium), parent pickups (school yard) or aftercare (cafeteria). Teachers will transition their to their designated area until all scholars have been verified and dismissed
