SCHOOL NUTRITION NEWSLETTER
message from the director
Halloween signals the end of October. As we usher in November, be sure to exercise your right to vote. Early voting is open now. Operating a federal program, including the tasks you do at work, the amount of your paychecks and the food we buy, is based on legislation, funding and policy passed by Congress. Know who you are voting for and what they support. You play an important role in their decisions by making your voice heard. Advocacy is believing in the importance of our child nutrition program and getting others to understand and believe in the positive impact it has on students, parents and employees like yourself. Rob reminded me that some of us learned about Congress by watching the almost 50 year old Schoolhouse Rock video, "I'm just a bill on capital hill." For the rest of us, an updated (less entertaining) video titled Schoolhouse CROCK is here: https://vimeo.com/571817973/df78d26140
Remember, President Thomas Jefferson's words are still relevant today:
"We in America do not have a government by the majority. We have government by the majority who participate."
Participate.
With gratitude,
Kathy
Take the pledge!
Did you know...?
This time of year, the great debate always begins again: is candy corn delicious… or terrible? Odds are, you believe one or the other. But this candy (invented in the 1880s) had a unique nickname near the turn of the 20th century. Any guesses on what candy corn used to be called?
- Candy corn kernels
- Chicken feed
- Sweet corn
