Upper El Weekly Newsletter
05/16/2022 - 05/20/2022
Dear Upper Elementary parents,
Highlights from this past week:
The 6th graders are having a great time in Denver for their end of the year field trip. We can’t wait to hear stories and see pictures. They will be returning on Saturday.
4th and 5th graders enjoyed a morning fly fishing at David and Sheilla Torkelson’s ponds, Sunshine Springs. Many students caught fish. Thank you to David, Sheilla and friends for hosting and teaching the students how to tie flies and fly fish. It was a fun day.
In academics, students are finishing end of year research and projects. The final research project, which is on a topic related to their end of year field trip, will be presented on Tuesday and Wednesday of next week. Geometry (math) projects are also being completed. Math lessons have continued as well. A poetry book is being compiled, and students are reading books in groups. Next week our final math lessons will be on square root with Montessori materials (6th grade); percent-decimal-fraction conversions (5th grade) and adding and subtracting fractions with different denominators (4th grade).
Thank you to all of our parents who volunteer!!!!! We really appreciate you. We have many weekly jobs, daily jobs, and periodic jobs in the classroom, so please let us know if you are interested in coming in. We welcome parents to observe and volunteer in the classroom.
Important information and upcoming events:
Next week is the last week of school before summer break. Friday is a half day – buses will depart school at 11am. Please plan accordingly.
Upcoming events: please see the school calendar on our website for important upcoming events. Next week is busy!!!
Monday and Tuesday – please send comfortable walking shoes and a water bottle with your child to school. We will be doing some outdoor activities which may include climbing C hill (if weather and time permits).
Wednesday – pasta making at school! Also a presentation on Abigail Adams, a historical figure.
Thursday – 6th grade graduation at 10am at Crawford Town Hall. 6th grade parents and families please plan to attend. A Sign Up Genius was sent to your email and the committee should have been in contact with you. Be prepared to say a few words of appreciation / encouragement / memories about your child at the ceremony. Teachers and students will also be speaking.
Friday – field day!!! Contact Jack Bair (or your child’s teacher) if you want to volunteer. Jack has some fun (and potentially wet) activities planned for all the children, so please have them wear clothes that can get wet, and pack a towel and/or dry clothes to change into for the ride home.
Summer work: we highly recommend continuing to have your child practice reading, writing, and math over the summer so that they don’t experience the “summer slide.” We recommend reading 30 minutes every day (and discussing their book with you), keeping a journal and/or writing letters to loved ones, and doing some math a few times a week. Students forget learned skills easily at this age, so it is important to keep practicing. There are two options for math: we will be sending home a summer math packet for students to keep up with their practice. Prizes will be awarded to students who complete the packet and return it to school in August. Your child may also practice on the computer using Moby Max, which has lessons targeted toward skills your child needs to practice.
Here is login information for Moby Max:
School code: co429
Username: first initial last name (ex. John Doe would be jdoe)
Password: 4 digit code (each student knows his / her 4 digit school code)
Have a wonderful weekend! Please let us know if you have any questions or concerns. Email is the easiest way to communicate with us, and be sure to check out our school website for important information and dates.
