BAKING SODA VOLCANO

Marc Llambrich 3ESO

Question

Will the eruption be bigger if you add more boking soda or vinegar?

Materials

Water bottle.

Warm water.

Few drops of dish detergent.

Baking soda.

Vinegar.

For volcano:

Rice Flour.

Water.

Cream of tartar.

Food coloring.

Background Research

Research information on volcanoes, volcanic eruptions, acid/base reactions, and decomposition reactions. Answer the following questions: How can volcanic eruptions be simulated with models? What happens when acids and bases are mixed? Why do these chemical reactions occur? What are decomposition reactions?

Hypotesis

I thought that more vinegar would make it explode.

Results

  • Adding vinegar to baking soda gives you an immediate reaction.
  • Adding baking soda to vinegar, the reaction is delayed, but then fizzes the same amount.
  • More vinegar is better. A 12 to 1 ratio of vinegar to baking soda caused a fizzing explosion!
  • Conclusions

I concluded that adding more of both vinegar and boking soda made the best volcano.
